New Member-need advice!

Postby Flippy » Wed Dec 24, 2003 7:32 pm

Merry X-mas!

I have only just found this forum and it sounds like the place i need! I have been flying with CFS2 since its release and have recently bought a new `puter. On my old one, I had screen stutters at the lowest setting possible. I now have an Intel 4 2.66Ghz, 512 mb ram, 80 GB hard drive, 128mb graphics card, blah, blah. I still have minor stutters, especially when shooting something up/down, and there is an explosion, otherwise, it runs pretty well at best graphics. Any help or advice? I can`t believe that my computers spec is the issue!!
Also, does Detail texturing in the advanced graphics options make any difference atall? If it does, why is it not default with best graphic slider set at `6`?
Im not the worlds best home computer know stuff-any advice from your learned minds would be greatly appreciated!

What make is your graphics card? And what drivers do you have for it? Also have you tried a reinstall? Added any aircraft or other addons recently? All important details...

Well, now that i have got xmas out of the way, i have read through some of these other threads. It seems that many of you have frame rates between 16-25. When the action is low, I can get rates up to 45-55 per sec!, especially at sea, but once combat begins and smoking planes get into the picture, it drops to a lowly 9 very very quickly.
I have had a look at FIREMANS tweaking guide. I have a pretty good car (i think) Geforce, with DirectX 9 and run XP. I have not downloaded any new planes or missions or scenery.
It is a pain as I cant see why smoke, clouds or sun glare cause such a sudden drop in frame rates on a new fast machine. Also, I have noticed it does this more when view is front. out of cockpit.

Can anything actually be done, or shall I just be pleased that in freeflight and quick combat I have a very high frame rate (until explosions or clouds) and live with my 15 per sec in the campaigns???

well I dont have your card
or
Cfs2 for that matter (at least not yet)

but I just like to make a suggestion

Have you tried playing with AA (anti-anilasting) I've heard that some people got rid of the problem of effect and clouds by putting AA the highest it will go.

Don't take my word for it though, I don't even have the game I just wanted to make a suggestion
Believe half of what you see, 1/4 of what you hear, and nothing that I say

Flippy, there are several things you can do with your machine and the settings.

First, run DX diagnostics by going to Start/Run and type in dxdiag. Hit ok. Run all the tests and see if everything is ok. Double check what version of DX you are running. In your post you said DX 9. Is it DX 9, dx9.0a or dx9.0b? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

What I suggest first is you go get the latest drivers for your Video Card and install them. Then, if you don't have dx9.0b, get it. You can get it from Microsoft.

Once you have done this, make sure in your video card settings you have Anti Aliasing checked. Make sure that in the game settings, Anti Aliasing is NOT checked. Let your card do that job. See what you get after you have done these things. Let us know after that and we can go from there.

Good Luck and see ya soon.

I have CFS2 running, if I wish, @ 1600x1280x32 Under XP with everything maxxed, 8xAnti Alaising (Which is a killer!) 8x Anisotropic Filtering (Which looks soo nice!) CFS2 will go down to single figure frame rates when everythings happening at once, but, considering I've got "lingering flak" effects along with most of Nibbo's cool effects http://web.tiscali.it/no-redirect-tiscali/jobim/cfs2/ I'm hardly surprised!

I'd say something's running in the background causing CFS2 to slow up. With 2.66ghz compared to my chuggin 1.8, you should be getting superb performance.

Turning off anti alaising gives me a low of about 20fps, fine by me considering the add ons.....

I've got a "virgin" lol cfs2 install, this runs smoothly regardless of settings, often over 120fps!  if only CFS3 were the same.  ::)

Puzzled.
