Aircraft Limit in CFS2?

Postby Professor Brensec » Sat May 10, 2003 2:40 am

I know this question has come up a few times before, but I've done a search and haven't been able to find reference to it in any recent posts.

How many aircraft can you have in CFS2 folder before it plays up.

I assume that's what it's doing to me. I have (without noticing) managed to amass 120 planes in the folder (including stock). All of a sudden certain planes are not showing up in the Sim. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to which planes are affected.
I then realised I had definitely gone over the limit. I know it's around 90. What is it exactly.

P.S. For good reason, I don't want an extra version of the Sim on my drive.  ;D ;D ;)

Thanks  ;D

It's not too bad to find them, Foz.
I changed all the "titles" so they are in alphabetical order (as I do when I add any plane).

I will have to do as you say and put some in a "standby hanger". But I only want to do that to as few as possible.
As you probably know, in order to put a plane "back in the game" you have to close the Sim and then do the add-on in the program folder and then re-initialise the game again.
If your P.C. initialises as slowly as mine does, you don't want to have to drop out and go back in very much, if you can help it.  ;D ;)

Just to clarify. CFS2 is the only M$ sim to have an actual limit to the number of aircraft installed at any one time. This is often referred to as the CFS2 "100 plane" limit although the number seems to vary & is usually lower. Anything over 90 is likely to cause unexplained problems & those error messages to appear.

The limit is due to the Mission Builder rather than the sim & people without the MB installed don't appear to have the problem. On discovering this bug in the very early days of CFS2 I alerted people to the problem in this very forum. Nobody replied or took any notice so I featured it & suggested the Hangar folder fix on my CFS2 FAQ page. http://www.simviation.com/lair/cfs2faq.htm

If you have room on your HD a duplicate install of CFS2 is the best way over it. IMHO

Ah, the good old 100 plane limit. It comes into play when I have about 98 planes installed. Over two installs of CFS2 I have about 400 planes! Inside the main CFS2 folder I have a folder called Hanger. Both my installs have all the gauges and weapons etc. for all the planes I've ever installed so it is not much of a problem to just move planes from the hangers into either install.
One thing I have noticed is that when you click OK to the two error messages, click again on Fly Now and it loads and flys just fine in both Free Flight and Quick Combat.

Hi Tempest. I've also noticed this. The aircraft will display & work normally although exceeding the limit can affect 3rd party weapons libraries when the weapons won't show up. If any weird problems or error messages suddenly crop up, removing a few 3rd party aircraft will usually fix it.

Hi there Hagar, hope you enjoyed your recent flight! :)
It's funny how these things crop up, but I've just added a new 3rd party plane and spent an hour or so in free flight getting a screen shot or two. However, tried it in QC and it crashed to desktop. I played around with it for a bit and in the end just moved a couple of planes to the hanger and Hey Presto, QC works just fine! It just goes to show how strange CFS2 can be when you get close to that limit and how shifting a plane or two can sort it out!

Yes thanks. The word "enjoyed" cannot possibly describe what was, for me anyway, a unique & unforgettable experience. It made me feel like a 16 year-old again. ;D

Thanks for the insight people.

I've moved some planes to an "Internal hanger" and the "2 messages" problem has stopped. Although it was omly the A6M2_ZERO that kept coming up on mine. That was the only plane that "disappeared" from the list.

I would seem to have another problem which I thought was connected to the "limit" issue, but it seems there's more to it.

There are still about 6 planes that will not show up, but seeing as they are recent installs, I'm sure they never did show up. They are all GC planes (if that means anything) that is, they all have a GC prefix before the aircraft model name.
I've tried everything, even removing the panels and sound folders (if they had their own) and replacing them with simple alias folders. This hasn't even worked.

Any suggestions?  ;D ;)

The GC prefix usually means that these are planes by Ground Crew designs. These are usuall very good planes and I've got several and have never had a problem with them. However, Hagar is the man to ask about this one!

The A6M2_ZERO is a default aircraft so make sure this is installed & available on the Free Flight menu. If not, this could explain your problem with the GC (Groundcrew) aircraft as the sound could be aliased to it. The GC guys know their stuff & you should have no problems with it.

KmiKz

for this probleme I use the ACman hangar in  cfs2 with it you can install or remove as yo want your aircraft folder I think you can find it in this site utilitary section
After that I've for the moment three intallation cfs2
one for the mission builder
one for the asia theatre and one for the european theatre
i'll install a next for the east front with snow scenery
with that you can have the good planes on the right theatre

it's a solution

Foz,

are all of your planes CFS/CFS 2?

In my experience, Civilian airplanes have a limit of 50 so if if you have them, they could be the problem

Alz. Fozzer doesn't use CFS at all.  ;)

I don't understand your theory. As I pointed out earlier in this thread, CFS2 is the only M$ sim with a limit to number of aircraft installed. This is a limitation of the onboard Mission Bulder rather than the sim. The actual limit seems to vary according to a particular installation. I'm not sure whether this number is related to MDL files, AIR files or Aircraft.cfg entries. It cannot distinguish between military & civil aircraft.
