    A quik question ,if this wrong place sorry, but just downloaded and flew tha AH1F Cobra.  How do you make a helicoptor hover or can you???

With this type of rotor you will probably need to first secure handbrake ctrl(.) depending on your cfs settings switches, start engine, increase power to above 50% engage flaps 1 step (F7, on mine) increase power to 70% keeping the nose in a straight line with slight downward pressure on stick release brake and you can then opt for a hover with increased flaps and speed reduction. Be careful of the spoiler key, it works differently on many choppers and harriers. You have to experiment a little with each designers choppers because don't forget cfs2 was not designed for this but they are very smart designing these and it's a lot of fun test flying.........hope this helps rotorhead! AS far as I'm aware Heli's in CFS use the same B206 airfile base as in FS.

Flaps should be irrelevant.... ???

If you need Heli instruction please visit the hoversafe academy (until I update our own Heli tutorials here) but it helps to understand the basics

* Throttle becomes COLLECTIVE - the lever that controls LIFT

* Stick is similar to an aircraft but with extra emphasis on attitude. i.e. to slow down - stick back. Increase speed - stick forward ....... & All in conjunction with the use of your Collective lever (throttle) to control height.

* & a twist grip joystick to control yaw (rudder) - this is essential in maintianing direction inheli's much more than fixed wing due to the forces of yaw caused by the rotation of the main rotors ...

Hi. I am about to buy cfs2. can anyone tell me if I am going to need original files from the FS series to get addon helos working properly in cfs2.

Add-on helicopters will never work correctly. I'll explain further down.

You can fly a helo using the download packs available here and most other good flightsim sites, these include the basic guages and sounds needed to allow the helo's to work.

The problem with helo's in CFS 2 is rather annoying. You can fly them yourself using the helo airfile, but the AI can't fly helo's. If you use a simulated helo airfile the AI can fly it, but somethimes has problems. Simulated airfiles don't allow for the vehicle to hover.

I hope that future versions of CFS will allow for proper helo operations. :)

You are absolutely right Silverfoxx about the ai in chopper missions, wingmen don't last long so you have to fly alone. An earlier reply said that flaps have no effect on hover, that is not correct if you fly harriers or the Uh1b Gunship which will not lift without them (harriers included) For the cobra no you don't need flaps just increase power and keep you nose down.

When discussing helicopters in CFS you have to forget what the model looks like and worry only about the .air file.

A true helicopter .air file can't be flown by the AI, although it will work fine as a player flown aircraft.

You can make a simulated chopper by using a "VSTOL" .air file. This .air will basically be a fixed wing plane that has very powerful flaps. The AI can fly these. the VSTOL .air doesn't allow for vertical flight or hovering...but in a mission you really don't need those capabilities anyway. :)

Thanks Silver fox for this advice it helps a lot for understanding this helicopter re vstol question and saves a lot of time messing around wondering the differences. I have Dwights UH1-B and it has the powerful flaps setting at two stages which gives it a hover mentality but boosts it higher so you have to push your stick down hard to descend with the setting and spoilers tenderly but is a lot of fun to fly. The harriers are similar with flaps controlling the jet nozzles direction and hitting them from 400 knots brings you down to about 30 knots in a matter of seconds (mind your head on the canopy) They are a lot of fun though and great for checking out your scenery and airport layouts, thanks Bertie :D
