MSFS 2024 performance drop

Postby Ben252 » Fri Sep 05, 2025 9:03 am

Hi all, has anyone else noticed a performance drop in both 2020 and 2024 after recent updates. I'm not bemoaning the usual 'I want more FPS' but I have noticed a considerable drop in both sims performance which in turn led me to look at the FPS. I'm getting a fairly solid 44-45 in both and it's main thread limited. I'm definitely not short of resources and have tried all the usual culprits for performance dips. Obviously FPS isn't everything but noticing stutters and jumps now which destroys the immersion.

The PC is a i9 14900, 128Gb DDR5, RTX5090 so I should be getting far better than that. Doesn't seem to matter what graphic options I choose the figures remain the same. Any ideas?

Thanks

I'm not sure if I noticed anything, at least in MSFS2020.
However I think I have read somewhere that there were some changes to the way the LODs were handled for both the terrain and the objects in the SU3 for MSFS2024, so maybe the difference in performances comes from there ? Basically, even if your settings are the same as before the SU, the amount of details on the screen is not the same anymore ?
Just to be clear, I'm just trying to guess here. I have no idea about what is really happening.

In case it helps somebody else out, I had a session looking at this yesterday focusing on CPU utilisation, particularly on non-MSFS items that were draining resources. I found that the Sysmain service was particularly guilty. This is the Windows SuperFetch function where Windows lines up likely programs and files that you 'might' open next. I disabled the service and instantly MSFS2024 leapt up to an average 60 FPS with everything maxed out. More importantly its as smooth as snake skin now.
