Ahhh yes the myth that Canadians are such nice people just exploded. Don't flame me, I am Canadian. I lived in UK and Europe for years and years but I have never been more screwed over by supposed friends, colleagues, builders etc since I came home.

No, it's not the "norm". How to deal with it depends on the situation. If it's a co-worker, let them know their behavior is not appreciated. If that doesn't help, bring it to the attention of the supervisor. If it's the supervisor, if the company has one, bring it to the attention of the human resources department, or the supervisors supervisor. If that doesn't change anything, then that particular company probably isn't worth working for.

British Columbia.

A British Colony.

The residents being British (Northern European) may explain the rather insular manner of the folks residing there? .... ....!

British folks don't mix very well and can be rather intollorant..

.....in my experience! ..... :? ...!

The solution is to go into business for one's self, preferably to compete with whoever deserves the most revenge, and laugh all the way to the bank. You can't reason with bullies.

Now a days, with social media 'kicking in' (pun intended) the parents of those bullies are finding life not so comfortable. Bad 'press'. Social pressure and object of ridicule (raised a brat, etc) is 'pain' for them, caused by their bully offspring. Guess who gets it 'in the end'? It's about time.

In America, corporate culture "embraces" (to use another lousy corporate cliché) those who say "Yes, boss, yes, boss", those who can turn off their reasoning and conscience. Compliance, dumbed down obedience, is what gets you promoted. We often hear corporatists claiming "We're a family" - if that's true, more often than not, it's one hell of a dysfunctional family. As for going into business for yourself, maybe naïve, harder than ever to do in 2017, in the USA, unless you think driving for Uber or some other lousy contract work equals going into business for yourself. The big corporations dominate while small businesses, the mom and pop shops, the local stores, continue to fade away and disappear. And third-world style part time employment without employee benefits, no health care, etc., continues to increase. Authority-driven hierarchies tend to promote those with the biggest mouths and with smaller brains, and sustains that mysterious force which compels people who work at big corporations to do very, very stupid things. Think of airlines bumping people off flights, security dragging people down the aisles ... or shades of Enron with its artificial power blackouts and fraud ... or, lately, Equifax and its mismanagement, its failure to invest in proper data security. When it's more important to say "Yes, boss" and disregard employees, ignore human problems, the results are always awful.

yea ...seems like that...........an extreme example in the past, is the building of the swedish ship vasa......if it had been built according to the original specs., it probably would have sailed well...but pressures from ignorance from above......namely the king....resulted in disaster.......battle between power, and reason i guess....
seems to repeat itself through history, from the daycare centers, to the top.....

As a most ashamed American I feel compelled to point out that our idiocracy elected Donald Trump, the Bully-in-Chief. Sadly, I have not found another country that will take me.

Compelled eh? Imagine if the other one had been elected. Is it not about time that we the public expected more.

Yes, indeed, two really bad choices. We should expect more but we are victims of our own ineptitude and laziness. I feel fortunate that at age 76 I will not have to live with the terrible results for too long.

I tend to be polite to, but ignore, those who don't interest me.

The last time that there was one guy ridding my butt and pushing the tolerance envelope, I told him this in front of several other employees;

"Look, I really hate arguing with stupid people."

DEAD SILENCE

He and I later turned out to be friends. I think that he just didn't realize that he was being an A$$ at the time.

That probably doesn't help, but there it is, one answer.

Alas the world is filled with self-centered jerks. The trick is when you quit to make sure they end up having to lick the spoon of the sh*t pot they've been stirring... I've sunk a few bullies over the years with the power of honesty and a dash of cunning :D
