Scenery Add ons

Postby greywolfe » Wed Oct 11, 2017 8:47 am

I have tried millions of times to load add on scenery to my FSX on home vista. On my latest attempt I have created a folder called AddOn Scenery2 and have put the downloaded scenery and texture files of an add on scenery package into that folder. I then go to FSX scenery library / Add area and i see on the drop down options my folder AddOn Scenery2 under Microsoft Flight Simmulator X. The full path to where I have my folder is Computer /program files/ Microsoft games /Microsoft Flight Simmulator X /AddOn Scenery2.

If I go to FSX/ scenery library/ add area ---I can see my folder Addon Scenery 2 come up as an option.

If I select the area i get the response .........."No items match your search"

As I'm clearly as thick as a brick can somebody cue my frustration in simple words please

Its the same procedure for Vista/Windows 7/8/10.

Activate the scenery in the Fsx scenery library.
1. Start Fsx and click on Settings.
2. select Scenery Library.
3. select add area.
4. Double click on Addon Scenery or the location with the scenery folder in.
5. Double click on scenery folder you want to add to the library.
6 Click on ok and then click on the white area under texture folder to add the scenery to FSX.

You are correct in making that 'AddOn Scenery2' folder. The fault is that you don't have the correct folder structure. You need to make a folder under that folder you created and give it a relevant name like 'Meigs FSX', or 'Grand Canyon', (or whatever). Then you make ANOTHER folder named 'scenery' under that. Then put all the '*.bgl' files into that. It may, or may not, have a 'texture' folder. If so, make on under 'Meigs FSX' (or 'Grand Canyon') and put all the '*.bmp' files in THAT folder. If it does not have textures (*.bmps) then DON'T make a texture folder. Then when you go Library, you click add, you click on 'Meigs FSX' (or 'Grand Canyon'), then click 'OK' then click anywhere on white space. Hope this helps.

Not sure why you need the extra AddOn Scenery2 directory. Most 3rd party is configured ready to install nowadays in an appropriately named parent folder.

First extract the downloaded zipfile. Then simply paste the included parent folder (directly containing Scenery & Texture sub-folders) into the default FSX\Addon Scenery folder. That would be the folder named LFNA in this example:

Finally, start FSX & select this parent folder from the Scenery Library Add Area option to activate the scenery.

You might need to click anywhere in the selected folder as described in this video for FSX to recognise it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8kO1IsJMuE

I NEVER extract anywhere near my Sim, EVER!!!. I make a temp folder and extract there. Making a seperate folder for your scenery makes it easy to delete it if you want. My default 'Addon Scenery' is ALWAYS empty. The sim 'looks' in that folder automatically. I just prefer sim not to 'look for things' to load, just because. If I de-activate all the scenery, in the library, that is under my own 'AddOn Scenery CB', the Sim won't 'look' or 'see' anything and Sim loads faster. I don't need LeMans France scenery bogging sim down when I am flying in California.

Time out
FSX does not look in the addon scenery by default any scenery you put in the addon scenery has to be manually added the first time you put something in there. FSX will not automatically add it .Now once activated if you put more scenery in the addon scenery folder inside the sub folder called scenery than FSX will add it the next time you run it.
If you make a folder called GRAND CANYON for example then you have to make a scenery folder & a texture folder if there are textures and as stated all of the BGL files go into the scenery folder inside of the folder GRAND CANYON
bit maps belong in the texture folder.
Once you are finished you have to activate the scenery
My self I just put any new scenery inside of the scenery folder in the ADDON SCENERY FOLDER and than FSX will automatically add it because the folder has been activated.
but most people like to use folder with meaningful names so you have to activate them. 8-)

You must be doing something wrong. Give us an example of the scenery you're trying to install.
The exact title with the file name or link to the download page so I or someone else can download the file to check it out.

Hi Hagar - I have an Addon Scenery folder in the directory path detailed below:

C: Computer/Program Files/Microsoft Games/ Microsoft Flight Simulator X/Add on Scenery

In the Addon Scenery folder I have 2 folders:

Canary Scenery (Containing a load of BGL Files)
Canary Texture (Containing a load of Bitmap images )

I would expect that when tick the Addon Scenery option in the Scenery Library that all would be well
This was not working and to compound the issue I have accidentally deleted the Addon Scenery option in my Scenery Library and I can't add it back in (Even if I click in the white space before clicking OK.

Summing up then :
1) How do I add "Addon Scenery" back into my Scenery Library
2) WHy does my folders configuration above not work

Thanks for your time - it is much appreciated

1) The FSX default Addon Scenery folder should include two empty sub-folders named scenery & texture. This is activated by default in the Scenery Library & is intended for adding various 3rd party scenery without needing to activate it. No need to worry about that right now.

2)
In the Addon Scenery folder I have 2 folders:

Canary Texture (Containing a load of Bitmap images )

This will not work. In the Addon Scenery folder you should have an appropriately named parent folder* (For example: Canary) containing two sub-folders named Scenery & Texture.
BGL files in the Scenery folder & texture files (usually BMP format) in the Texture folder. To activate the new area in the FSX Scenery Library select the Canary parent folder.

Please try this & tell me if it works.

*Note: The example in my previous reply is named LFNA.

I have now opened a new folder called Canary and placed it in the Addon Scenery folder.
I have moved the Scenery and texture folders to this Canary Folder.
I then went to the FSX Scenery Library and clicked ADD AREA
The resulting box displays a top field entitled Look In:- Microsoft Flight Simulator X
Below this there are a list of sub folders one of which is Addon Scenery.
I double clicked on Addon Scenery to get to my new folder "Canary"(which now contains the Scenery and Texture folders)
I single clicked on the file called Canary and pressed OK - Nothing happens (even if I click in the white space below

I then tried a double clicked on the Canary folder and this moved into the "Look IN" field and then pressed OK - and nothing happened
Trying both options multiple time seems to give me different result.
Sometimes I get the error message:-
SCENERy.CFG File errror. Invalid remote scenery path in Area.115
On other occasions the same error message refers to Area.118

The current situation is this:

I have a folder configuration like this :- C: Computer/Program Files/Microsoft Games/ Microsoft Flight Simulator X/Addon Scenery
And in the Addon Scenery folder I have a sub folder called Canary
In the sub folder Canary there are 2 folders

Canary Scenery
Canary texture.

In the FSX scenery library somehow I have managed to get an area called Canary to appear in the options.

So all this looks good - but when I click on the Canary option I get the "SCENERy.CFG File errror. Invalid remote scenery path in Area.118"
