Severe Weather Warning!

Postby Fozzer » Sat Jan 30, 2016 4:41 am

Yesterday, I fancied a nice flight in my little Cessna 150, from Meadows Field (Bakersfield), following Interstate 99 in California Central Valley, up to Merced, via Fresno, to meet up with a Mate to take a trip up Highway 120 through Yosemite National park in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

That was, until I dialled up the local weather forecast for the area!.. ....>>>

http://www.google.org/publicalerts/aler ... ce=maps-sp

No way, Ho-say!... :o ...!

Now, I know our Doug, Flying Trucker, is very partial to a lot of snow, ice, freezing cold, and poor visibility, during his flights up in the Far North (Canada)!.....
....But, for me, those sort of weather conditions spell danger and death for the average GA Pilots!.... :naughty: ....!

So, Captain Sensible (Me) phones up his Mate, explains the situation, and recommends postponing the flight to another day when it is much safer and more pleasant....

...and stays safely in the The Bakersfield restaurant, with a nice hot mug of coffee, and an egg and bacon breakfast, and marmalade on toast!.... ...!

Much more sensible for a very cautious Sim Pilot (Me)!.... 8-) ....!

Love that Thrifty 150 of yours Paul... <<q

Yes I do like aviating in IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) about as much as VFR (Visual Flight Rules) when aviating in real aeroplanes.

Of course the aircraft must be equipped to fly in inclement weather and the crew if there is one qualified and current on type.

When aviating in what folks presume is the north of Canada the cold is a dry cold, much nicer than the cold weather one would experience say living around the Great Lakes area which is a wet or damp cold.

One dresses in layers where relevant and uses common sense...like don't pee into the wind...

Most folks think Canuck Land is covered in snow all year, we all live in igloos and most Canucks walk their Polar Bears like dogs.

We want folks to believe that, keeps them from moving here... :violin:

Good morning Paul... ;)

If you check the weather at all have a look at the Great Lakes Region where we live.

Our neighbours south of the border always seem to get more snow and terrible winter storms more than we do in Canuck Land.

Today and for the next few days we should be on the Plus side of the Temperature Scale and I was going to see if the Old Girl wanted to go out and cut the grass...

The problem of having a lack of snow, the farmers who milk dairy cattle rely on wells and the lack of snow in this area last year had farmers in general buying water and that has to be trucked in.

Agriculture can be a costly experience if Mother Nature does not co-operate.

Hello Doug....

..being a keen, daily Sim Flier in the State of California and surrounding areas for the past 18+ years, and being a typical British Bloke living in a temperate zone, who is always fascinated with anything to do with "Weather" (mostly cold and wet, it seems), I have been keenly watching the effects of the drought on the landscape and its inhabitants there for the past few years, and I think this will make an interesting read for you!

https://stories.californiasunday.com/20 ... -fairmead/

Too little snow and rain, and too many folks tapping the water supply!

I follow the daily news and weather in...>>> http://kron4.com/ and http://www.latimes.com/

Always makes regular, fascinating reading, for; Murder, Kidnapping, Shooting, Rape, Pillage, ...and occasional drought news..... ;) ...!

Never a dull moment in SOCAL...

...trust me... ;) ...!

Being a native to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan I can attest to the "wet cold" and it is bone chilling. Now I live in a much warmer Alabama, and I find it very easy to make people believe that we have Polar Bears in the Upper Peninsula  :naughty: (technically, from where I grew up, you can drive south for 7 hours and get to Canada, so I tell people here that I come from North of Canada)
