Just started a new flight from Tokyo to Beijing and noticed that the IFR flight plan routed me over N. Korea. Don't believe this would happen in real life as that SOB would shoot you down and say you were spying. Real commercial flights don't go over N. Korea do they? Just wondering.......

Unless any area is termed a no fly zone than it is likely that they do.
I usually will use a different means to create most of my flight plans as I just do not like the ones that FSX or FS9 creates as they will not use SIDS or STARS
I use this site http://rfinder.asalink.net/free/ and as the link suggests it is free and the plans can be imported into both FSX and FS9. Or you can input them into a FMC

Hi Gary, I had a look at this rfinder link, but it does not look like the free version has an "export" option. (On the paid version yes).
However, you mention that the plans can be "imported" into FSX.

How is this done?

I did some checking and JAL does indeed have a Tokyo to Beijing flight that overflys N. KOREAN airspace as does ANA. The N. Korean government charges a hefty fee for allowing these flights but it is cheaper than using a route that takes them around N. Korea.

If you're looking for a really good flight planning program, try Plan G. I've been using it for over a year and it hasn't let me down yet. You can control the entire flight from within Plan G's UI if you want to (not that I've ever thought that would be fun) and it exports to FS9, FSX, P3D, and X-Plane. Very versatile, and the tools available make flying a route much more precise, and you can add your own waypoints along any length of the route. I especially like being able to locate various points of interest awhile I'm flying and make a detour towards them whenever I want.

rfinder is ok as a starting point but useless as far as sids and stars.
may i suggest you look at vatsim for any country your interested in, i find skyvector extremly useful, i've also subscribed to simplates which are fairly good but simply you cannot beat navigraph charts, when i'm in the 737ng 800 sim we use navigraph on an ipad.
At home i use simplates on an android tablet, I find this best combined with skyvector, that way I have a sid then look at skyvector to find the airway.
Sometimes if your doing a short flight the sid directly links to a star.

There is a good freeware flight planner:

It's easy to install & to use, it creates air routes depending on a few options, then it saves the plan which can be opened by FSX.

I am very happy with it.

I set the Laishan airport as fly-by point, to avoid to be considered a spy but of course you can choose any other point on the map.
