Is your Win 10 a clean installation or have you upgraded from a pevious Windows version?

Normally of course, you bring up the menu bar by pressing left alt; sometimes it needs to be held down for a second or so.

Is everything else working OK?

Hi, and thanks for the prompt replies. I am talking about the menus that come on when you press Alt, and when I say they don't appear, I mean they're invisible but clickable. And yes, I upgraded from Win 7 (wish I hadn't)
Cheers,

I use Win 10 but only a clean install version and FSX works OK on that. Air Hauler still causes crashes though; haven’t got to the bottom of that yet. I’ve read about other people suffering “anomalies” after upgrading from previous versions of Windows, especially with games. According to the Microsoft website, “programs that worked with Win 7 / 8 should work with Win 10.” Yeah right; perhaps on a fresh installation, but they don’t mention the problems that upgrading can cause!

I presume that FSX was already installed before upgrading to Win 10, in which case, a fresh install of FSX might be the way to go. It is important to totally blitz the old installation, including all items in the registry, documents and program data folders. A removal program such as IO bit uninstaller might help with that. If you have a lot of mods, it might be possible to save the old “sim objects / aircraft” , “gauges”, “sounds”, “scenery” and “effects” files and then copy them back to the new installation. I did a similar thing once on a Win XP PC and it worked OK but I’ve never tried it on Win 10.

You didn’t mention whether your FSX installation has been patched, but if not, it might be worth patching before reinstalling just in case that solves the problem.

Sorry if I’ve been teaching you to suck eggs, but I don’t know what solutions you’ve tried already.

Not sure why you would need to run in compatibility mode; I don't do that. My FSX is installed in the x86 folder of my K drive i.e., not the same drive as the OS.

Have you tried changing screen resolution? I use my screen's native resolution of 1920 x 1080 but I've heard of some screens giving peculiar results at certain resolutions.

I presume that it is not possible to roll back to Win 7 or you would have done that, right?

When you say you can’t do anything, do you mean the program won’t work at all? If so, it sounds like it may not have been completely uninstalled prior to reinstalling. You can’t rely on Windows uninstaller to do the job; it leaves all sorts of crap behind.

Without seeing your computer, it is obviously hard to guess what the problem might be but I can only make the following suggestions:

Ensure Direct X 9c is installed – it’s on the FSX discs, disc 2 I think. Try reinstalling it.

Check that you have the latest drivers for your graphics card.

Try different screen resolutions and also try switching to windowed mode and back again.

Ensure that you have:
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
Install for the 32bit or 64bit Windows OS.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downlo

Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x64)
In addition, Install this as well for a 64bit OS
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl

Try checking the “Direct X preview” button in the “settings / customize” screen of FSX. If it makes no difference, then it would indicate that FSX has been using DX 10 instead of 9c. Bit of a long shot but quick to do.

Rename the “Logbook.BIN” file in your “Documents / FSX” folder and allow FSX to create a new one.

Again, apologies if you have already tried the above. I’m really just guessing now as I’ve not had this specific problem, and from the lack of response, I presume no one else has either.

The problems that have been experienced with fight sims and Win 10 are many and varied as you can see from the internet. I think it helps to remove all the crapware from Win 10 before you even start to install programs on it. There are plenty of articles on this now, and programs to help you do it on the internet.

Here is something that just might help
Delete the FSX cfg file or just rename it to FSX.BAK than FSX will rebuild a new file. The problem could be in that file
The FSX cfg file is in a strange place It should be under C:/USERS/YOUR_NAME/APPDATA/ROAMING/MICROSOFT/FSX.CFG or something close to that I might not have the exact path correct At work right no so can not check. <<u
