Time Zones!

At 2:00 AM this morning, Sunday the 25th of October, the Magic Time Genie came down and lengthened my life by another hour.
Its now lighter earlier in the mornings, and darker earlier in the evenings.

The time format for me is now; GMT + 00:00.

Fortunately, he had already corrected the time on my Trusty Computer and Tablet, so it was just left for me stand on the chair to take all my clocks down off the wall, and wind the big hand back by one hour.

But its not all good news.... ...!

The end of next March, 2016, the Magic Time Genie will come back again and take an hour off my life!... ...!

So, I suppose, in the end, its all swings and roundabouts when it comes to Time...and the length of my life!!

Having my Breakfast in GMT + 00:00 Time Zone...
...now I've just got to figure out what time it is in the rest of the World....(That's where the "Fox Clocks" add-on, on my Browser helps!)

I have 2 watches that run on GMT cause I can't work out how to change the time, at least I'm in the right time for part of the year.

I hate the time change, I would prefer to remain on Summer time all the time. As for the time difference between the UK and Europe, I would like to see that go too. We are twenty miles from France, that hardly warrants an hours difference when Calais to Berlin and beyond is on the same time zone. And Portugal is further west than we are and is also on CET.

I love the old British; "Front Room"...

..the room which contains (or used to, in the Olden Days) the family Piano, topped with family photographs, and a bust of Beethoven!....

All our old houses had Front Rooms, Living/dining Rooms, and Kitchens....and upstairs, were the Bedrooms, Bathroom, and the "smallest" room!

..and an Attic in the roof containing relics...(including Grandma!).... ...!

I don't know if they build new/modern houses like that any more?.... ...1

The "Front Room" was ideal for "Snogging", while Mum and Dad were busy listening to the Radio in the "Living Room"!

My first post on here in YEARS ......

Try swtiching between time zones constantly and juggling the change in time between the two ... whilst working out the total amount of shift time you have left when running close to the edge cos of delays ...... add to that the clocks on the tachometers are never the same on each coach i drive, so glancing at them doesnt help ....... add to that the + or - an hour for the clock changes and it really screws things up ...... luckily I was in bed this time and a collegue had to deal with that mind bender.

When I was in the "Mob" we always worked on Zulu time, so I kept my watch set so I was never late and got charged with AWOL. I have 3 watches. 1 for Zulu, which is a cheap made in china Rolex wannabe. The other 2 are Seamasters which I set 1 for PST and the other for Pacific. We don't change till Saturday 31 by the way. What's really confusing is the Seamasters are both automatic, so to keep them going I have to wear 1 on the right wrist the other on the left all the time. Sometimes I forget which time we're on, the right or the left. When I got my 1st cell phone, I shoved all my watches in the top drawer and set the mobile to auto change. When I was working, I used to look forward to weekends when I'd park the phone, but when it got to Saturday, I got depressed because it was too close to Monday. I had this brilliant idea, why not cancel Mondays due to lack of support? I decided to have 2 Fridays instead of Monday. Everything worked out fine until I retired, now everyday is Friday! The phone is in the drawer along with the 3 watches. By the way the cheap imitation Rolex is still running.

The last couple of years I worked for Northworst Airlines I had to work in Detroit (KDTW) but I lived in Minneapolis (KMSP). DTW is in the Eastern Time Zone and MSP is in the Central Time Zone. So flying home on weekends I'd gain an hour and returning to work I lost an hour. But the time zone thing does have it's advantages. When our grand daughter was born in Germany back in December of1999 my wife and I flew over on the big Millennium New Years. We got to celebrate three times. Once for when it was midnight in Frankfurt, Germany, our destination, once for our airborne location somewhere over the Atlantic and then once again when it was midnight in DTW which is where our flight originated.

I have always been fascinated with "Time Zones" since using the Flight Sims, particularly in the USA, where they are split across the country, East to West, into; Eastern Time, Central Time, Mountain Time, and Pacific Time!

I have all these Time Clocks displayed across the bottom of my Firefox Browser, (Fox Clocks), including New Zealand Time....
...useful to know which of my Sim Flight Chums are awake, or still in bed!

I can remember generating a similar thread here, a few years ago, wondering how folks in the USA manage to contact companies, organisations, friends and family, etc, via telephone, when they are "probably?" living in different Time Zones!

How to you find the opening times of the Shop or Pub, etc, down town, when they may be in a different Time Zone split down the middle of the town...and hour apart!

How do you manage?... ...!

Try contacting your friends for a night out on the Town!... ....!

It must be a nightmare contacting folks across different Time Zones in the USA!

Fortunately for me, the whole of the UK is in the same Time Zone; Greenwich Mean Time, so phoning folks around the country poses no problem for me.

All of this information suddenly becomes important when using the Flight Simulators for exploring the World!

If you think it's confusing, try Newfoundland. They are officially 1/2 hour difference from the next time zone which is Eastern. No wonder the easterners reckon Newfies are 30 minutes short of an hour!

Actually Paul it's not all that hard. You pretty much just get accustomed to it. For instance, my Mom lives in the Eastern time zone and my wife's sister lives in the Pacific time zone while we are in the Central time zone. "Adaptability" is the key I guess.

The bit that "confusses" me, is if two folks live a short distance from each other, a few miles apart, maybe on the "Zone border-line", how do you know that they may be on a different Time Zone, with an hour difference between you both!

He/She may be Central Time, and you are in Mountain Time, and you can almost see each other, within shouting distance!... ...!

I feel I should sympathise with you, Hawk.....but as you say, you get used to it, over time!.... ...!

I lived in the western Florida panhandle for a while - Central Time.

The other 90% of Florida is on Eastern Time. What a pain.

Any time I visited my family - a two hour drive - I had to change my watch.

And all those prime time TV shows you like to watch between 8-11 pm. They're on from 7-10 pm.

Webb just hit on another aspect of the time zone dilemma. Television programming. A lot of times we'll see an advertisement for a TV show and you'll either see it or hear an announcer say " this show will be on at 8:00 o'clock Eastern, 7:00 o'clock Central." Some times they'll mention Mountain and Pacific times and some times they don't.
