FS9 and Win 8.1

Postby Gringo6 » Fri Jun 26, 2015 11:41 am

My old computer running on Vista has suffered un-reparable damage so to continue with FS9 I have to resort to my laptop which
runs Win 8.1. It can be done but it isn't very convenient. It does work with the unmodified FS9 as installed from the disks though.

I am trying to modify the "aircraft.cfg" file on one airplane but when I try to save the changed file it won't let me. It says "Access Denied"

Yes, I'm signed in as administrator , and yes I have removed the read-only restriction from the file.

What else do I need to do ?

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like you Installed FS9 in the 'Default' Program Files Folder, hence the 'Access Denied' message.

Uninstall FS9 completely, then create a separate Folder on your Hard Drive, away from Program Files. Re-install FS9 in that Folder.

Hope this helps!

The Text Files can be modified by first dragging them onto the Desktop, modifying them, and then dragging them back into place again....

..but Alan's excellent suggestion will prevent any more problems that you may have with the FS 2004 running under Windows 8.1.... :D ...!

The best place for any of the Flight simulators are on a drive that does not have your operating system on it. But with a laptop unless you have a external drive you are stuck. You can get FS to work installed in the default location but to me it is just a ton easier to install else where As you do not have to mess with permissions, nor worry about a third party program working correctly. Of course the best external drives are USB 3.0 drives as they are faster. USB 3.0 plugs have blue connectors which makes them easy to spot on a system as USB 2 and older are black.

Like I said what you say here will work. But the way I look at it there may be a reason as to why Windows 8 or 8.1 protects the program files. So by dropping the UAC down is kind of like surfing the inter net with out a anti Virus program. You just never know what might happen.
I am a firm believer in the saying that if it is not broke do not fix it.
What may seem harmless could in fact be very dangerous.
But to each his/her own. It is your system not mine.
Just like all the people who over clock there computers. Yes it can be done but if you do not get it right you will be sorry you ever messed with it.
They way I look at it is if you want a faster system than upgrade.

Dear Gary: If you're looking for a dedicated gaming computer you might want to
try Best Buy. I recently got an advertisement from them listing quite a few gaming
computers, including water cooled ones. But they aren't cheap. In the thousands of $$$.

Yeah, they run up to $4750 for the super duper lap top models. Wonder what games you'd be
playing to require something like that, Most are in the two grand range though. Didn't look at
the table top ones, only the lap tops. Makes my $299 lap top look out of place, even though
it runs FS9 with every thing nearly maxed out.

This is how much the top of the line CPU will cost you.
You estimate is not even close

The system I have now runs FSX maxed out with no problems and I can promise I did no spend more than $900.00 on my system. But I already had a very good case so that was on expense I did not have to make, The other fact was I bought everything a little at a time catching sales when I could. That is how I got my mother board. Back than it normally sold for close to $200.00 I paid a little over a $100.00 tax tag and title as they say. Same with the power supply I got it on sale as well. Sometimes it pays to be patient. <<u

Over $10,000.00 is a lot of money just for a CPU but my lord this thing must scream and must run hotter than you know where.
I would not know what to do with so much CPU.
