Tillie Tooter Passes Away, Family Confirms

Tillie Tooter has passed away at the age of 98, her family confirmed on social media.

Tooter made local and national headlines in 2000 when she survived several days in a swamp after her car was run off the road on Interstate 595. She survived by drinking rainwater she collected in her car, and eating pieces of candy.

Her determination and will to live won over South Floridians along with the rest of the country.

"This is the way my whole body looks -- from bites, I'm itching all over. I'm black and blue, but I don't care. I'm here," she said in a news conference shortly after she was found.

August 12th will mark 15 years since her crash.

Tooter's grandson Eric Simms posted on Facebook, saying, "After a spectacular 98 year run I am saddened to say that grandma Tillie has finally gone down for the count. RIP grandma."

No other information was immediately available.

You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I don't understand what's gone wrong with it. - George Hanson, 1969

I remember that, it was all over the news back then, a real survival story, just incredible. RIP. 98 is a good run of it.
