Here in S Florida, we get long warnings when a hurricane approaches *, so lots of prep time, not many tornado worries, and we're not in a quake zone. Hard to imagine the solid ground on which you stand suddenly not being so solid.

* The approach of Hurricane Andrew in late August 1992 was sudden. It seemed to come out of nowhere, and being a small, powerful, but fast moving storm, caught many by complete surprise. It had been so long since S Florida experienced a real tropical storm of any significant size, I think since 1965. and there were so many new residents, that many just didn't know how to prep or what to expect.

Be prepared in any way you can for anything.

Why don't you take a little detour, follow Route 66 to Albuquerque (if you have the time, stop and watch the Isotopes play Baseball), take a Left turn, and come up to Denver for a Visit? Enjoy the warm weather, fly around the Foothills, and you can even have Ice Water with your meal! Why deal with the San Andreas and all of that other turmoil?

But.... a Sim flight down Route 66 from Albuquerque to Barstow; via Gallup, Holbrook, Flagstaff, Kingman, and Needles, with a few detours along the way...eg: Sedona...really floats my Cessna 150!

Even a flight through Death Valley from Las Vegas to San Bernardino!

I love exploring the Great South-West region: New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California!

Some truly wonderful scenery along the way!

Please excuse the last post. I should be more specific in my post. Paul how do you go to google and bring that in to FSX and fly where you want to and enjoy the scenery like you do? Is it a special program you use? Greatful for your help!!!!

A very good question, Roy!.... ...!

Personally, in all my Flight Sims for the past 20+ years since Flight Unlimited I/II/III, Pro Pilot '99, FLY!, FS '98, etc...
All of my daily flying time is always spent exploring the scenery in small Piston-prop aircraft, including Microlights and Gyrocopters, at low level, allowing me to land and take off in very remote areas on grass, dirt, sand, etc....
This way I can explore the areas in great detail, and the Flight Simulators have gradually improved over the years to the extent that the scenery I see before me now is slowly getting identical to the same scenery I see in photographs of the same areas!

To achieve this in my copy of FSX, various add-ons have been installed to add more realism to the default scenery.

As well as various freeware airfields, I also use a combination of; "Ultimate Terrain USA + Canada and Europe" for the accurate ground scenery, and "ORB-X FTX Global" for the ground scenery Mesh!
This combination gives me the accurate Coast lines, Rivers, Lakes, Road and Railway lines, hills and mountains, etc, to guide me on my travels!
For the Maps as my guide I use the freeware; "Plan-G" and "FS Tramp" maps, including the Google Satellite Street maps to enable me to zoom down and personally explore the scenery, and walk around at ground level, when able!

All this is ideal for all those, like me, wishing to explore the wonderful ground scenery in the Flight Sims at low level!.

To achieve this, most of the various add-ons are obtainable as freeware, and increase the enjoyment of the default scenery!

"Photographic Scenery" add-on is also available for the Sim, but personally I prefer to use the Microsoft Autogen scenery for its inclusion of buildings and vegetation.

So there you go....

With a few add-ons, the Flight Sim experience can be made; "As real as it gets!"....trust me!.... ...!

You are very welcome, Roy!...

...and the "Moving Maps" that I mentioned also show the road numbers, so you cant "fly" the whole of Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica following the road, which will take you through some amazing scenery, especially in the South West!.... ...!

Flight Sim exploring is lots of fun!
