I've just deleted a long explanation intended to help you. I think that it's pointless. Below are the only 3 lines that apply to your problem.

Nvidia will not run your sim as well as you want it to. It probably never will.

The fact that you do have a newer graphics card that runs it well is great.

Your old Radeon R9 card is FAR beyond the needs of FS9.

I have always used a Nvidia card for FS9 and FSX and have never had shimmering problems or any other kind of problems at all. And I run both FS9 and FSX maxed out. So I do not know why you make such a statement.
I do not want to get into a argument with you the bottom line is if you fell that any other card is better for your system than by all means use it.
As for myself I had heard and read that Nvidia cards work better in some games than any other card out there especially for Microsoft games.
I would never make a statement like you just did.
I am sure that there are those out there that feel the way you do as well as there is others that feel the same way I do.
So like I said what ever card works best fro your system no matter who makes it than use that card.
No hard feelings intended

This is a problem whenever Nvidia enthusiasts read something that they don't like.

I did say that I cut it down to it's simplest elements.

Let me rephrase it.

1) Nvidia will not run your sim as well as you want it to. It probably never will.
Does anyone believe that Nvidia or AMD will tune a new, high end, graphics card to run FS9 better?
Heck, the Nvidia helpdesk told him to get a new fence
gypsymoth wrote:The graphics guru from Awd-it the maker, remotely fiddled with the nvidia settings, repeating what I'd already tried, but the fences still shimmered.

He pronounced the fault was with the fence texture & was too old for the modern GTX to render & I must either get another fence or remove it.

I reminded him the R9 280X does a fine job but he slandered AMD graphics & said I must put up with the GTX as it's the best money can buy.
I've news for him & his company....unless they change it for R9 280X I want my money back. I think they forget that I'm the customer paying lots of dosh & not getting what I want. What this space.

2) The fact that you do have a newer graphics card that runs it well is great.
The OP, himself, has said that his AMD card gave him better results.

3) Your old Radeon R9 card is FAR beyond the needs of FS9.
There! I was dissing AMD.

Unless he's playing high end graphic intensive games, that we don't know about, his quest for ever faster video cards isn't going to produce better results for FS9.

The brand of the card will not matter.

Tell me that I'm wrong.

Gypsymoth, I'm sorry that your post is going so far astray.

But if the Nvidia guy took control of your computer and couldn't fix those things that you want fixed, then I don't think that we can do much better.

It's your decision. Keep the Nvidia card, or go with the one that you say works best for you.

If you keep the Nvidia card, I'd suggest thinking about switching to FSX or FSX: Steam. I believe that a surprising amount of FS9 stuff WILL work in FSX.

You may even want to look into Prepared V2.5.

Heck, I'm flying some FS9 aircraft in Prepar3d V2.5 without any problems, from the Ford Project.

The machine with the R9 280X runs without shimmering fences.

This new machine is brand new was built by a firm I've used before & had a AMD card. They twisted my arm to have the GTX 980 when I asked for another R9. I wanted a new machine to run FS9 & my airfield at local events - they knew that. They told me the GTX would do a better job than the R9. It doesn't.

You say "do you really think that the latest graphics card would be fully utilized in a 10 year old computer? No way." but the R9 280X does it beautifully.

You say "Simply put, video cards from different companies may handle a graphics problem differently." and make my point for me. The R9 is as smooth as silk. It's all very well lauding nvidia but if I have problems with the Zotac GTX 980 that I don't get with the R9, the GTX is junk, so it's coming out & I'll get another AMD product. What else can I do.

I will, however, place unhelpful feedback which reflects the situation I find myself in having wasted £450 on something I didn't want. They forget, I'm the customer!! The gave me a problem that they cannot now fix.

As for FSX - I have it but none of my FS9 airfields will work with it, so FSX is no good to me.

I think it is time to get back to basics here. The bottom line is that a Graphics card no matter who makes it has to be able to decipher Direct X and the BGL files that are used to create scenery. The fact that card A we will call it worked on a older system with no problems does not guarantee that card A will do the same on the newer system If the fences are the only problem you are having I would agree that it is time to change the BGL file that is being used to create them. From what I know it more than likely has to do with what are called channels in the BGL file that are used to define the colors of a image.
One of the biggest problems with video cards to day is that there appears to be no standard in how each company creates there cards.
There are so many different aspects today than there were yesterday that it is not funny. Just take a look at the specs of the card that you are using now and the card that you used to use you will notice a huge difference between them.
Everyone today is looking for a faster video card to play the latest games with. The problem here is you are dealing with a very old program and in this case faster is not better. As stated the card you are now using far exceeds the program that you are using and even your older card was more than enough to handle FS9 maxed out. So what has happened here is the card you now have treats the old files differently than the older card. In this case I do not think it matters who makes the card.
So Either go back to the old card which your newer system might not support because of the interface type or live with the shimmering Or replace the files
This is the bottom line plain and simple.

The machine with the R9 280X graphics is a year old but with a slightly less powerful processor. The new setup has a more powerful processor & this is basically the only difference between the two. It will run a R9 280 or 290 with no problems. I'm not going to mess about any more hunting down another fence bgl.
I've been scouring site for a week now & have found nothing. I'm hacked off being the customer trying to solve a problem I don't have with any other machine.
The GTX 980 goes in the bin........it doesn't work!

I should also add I used that fence in the other 30 or so WW2 airfields I've made. It's not just one airfield. but all of them.

I'll be more than happy pay you $100 + UPS charge for the GTX 980, better than tossing it in the trash.

Well, trash/bin was figurative & I'm happy to say I've sold it for £300 which will pay for a nice R9..................

I truly hope that solves your shimmering fence problem. But like I said just because it worked in the older system there is no guarantee it will work in the newer system. The difference in CPU could change things.
Odds are it will work for you. But I still would not hold my breath.
There are so many other factors involved here.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Luck isn't involved. I don't have any shimmering fences with any of my 3 machines with AMD graphics.

The 1 yr old machine has this: Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4790 (3.6GHz) 8MB, 3GB AMD RADEON™ R9 280X, so not I think that old. This is the machine I take to shows, etc, & the fences don't shimmer.

The newest machine has this Intel Core I7 5820K EXTREME 3.6Ghz HEX Core CPU Processor BX80648I75820K - Socket 2011 with the GTX 980. The shimmering will stop with a R9 in situ !!

By not doing as I asked & putting a R9 in they're the loosers in the long because I'll never shop there again.
