If a major route, there may be ample vehicles to engage the traffic light response -- otherwise the cyclist will be waiting indefinitely: traffic lights acknowledge a bicycle & cyclist as a pedestrian so they may have to treat the red light as a stop sign if there is no other traffic in sight.

They're supposed to do this like all motorists: stop, look, yield and proceed with caution.

they cut in and out of stopped traffic
they dodge pedestrians in the crosswalk
Again, they are subject to the basic rules of the road and cutting in and out of moving traffic is dangerous, as is cutting around pedestrians; most bicycles have only caliper brakes these days, however, and I must admit these do not stop one as quickly as the old coaster brakes; the more expensive bicycles may have disk brakes which are a bit better than caliper brakes.
If they are stuck in stopped traffic, they do have the advantage of becoming pedestrians...

OldAirmail wrote:they dodge pedestrians on the sidewalk
Although I observed a local policeman riding his bicycle on a sidewalk, it isn't a legal procedure; if wishing to utilize a sidewalk, a cyclist should dismount his bicycle and walk it -- as a pedestrian.

All of that said, I discovered that many, if not most, motorists don't know the old traffic hand signals (last I knew, they were still in the driving manual); if a cyclist uses hand signals, the motorist is likely to "return the wave" rather than acknowledge a turn signal. I purchased some microswitches and lamp units, then wired in stop and directional lamps along with running and headlamps (an expense, perhaps a technology, the average cyclist can't manage).

All said, there's problems on all sides of the street...

You have an idea.

You've saved all your money to develop your idea.

You've mortgaged your house to put your idea into production.

You go bust.

I've done a lot of cooking in my life. I even cook much better than my wife.

It could just be me, but does anyone else (who cooks a lot) think that this is going to be a mega-seller?

Ok. Here's the question - Would you date or not date Hayley King?

Decide after reading & watching this.

College student caught on surveillance camera poisoning roommates' food

This is stupid on so many levels. Like pouring a blue liquid into something and just putting it back in the fridge without mixing it in.

Speaking of window cleaner, imagine if she had used radiator coolant? Deadly.

The fact that she's too stupid to come up with something more deadly shouldn't mean that she spends less time in prison.

But I'm willing to bet that she serves less than one year.

My punishment? Remove her ovaries. We don't want her reproducing.

I'd date her, I just wouldn't invite her to be "roomies" or accept any invitation for dinner.

This is not a claim that the climate isn't changing, nor that mankind doesn't have some effect upon it. Please READ it all before attacking.

Why does ALL climatological events HAVE to be due to man made global warming?
Just follow the money

Blob of warm Pacific water threatens ecosystem, may intensify drought - CNN 4/22/2015

This is actually old news, but it popped up again while I was reading the news, so here it is.

The claim, and I have no reason to doubt it, is that these areas in RED are "5.5 degrees warmer than normal".

Just looking at the red areas make it look like the area is as large as western Europe or the USA.

So lets think about this.

If everybody in Alaska, the northeastern part of Russia, and North Korea were to leave their cars running continuously.....

No. That wouldn't be enough to raise the temperature in the red area by 5+ degrees. Especially to a depth of "100 yards deep".

Maybe, just maybe, if all of those people left their doors & windows open all year long???

Nope.

You'd have to heat the air up to about 1,000 degrees over the water before an area of "1,000 miles long, 1,000 miles wide and 100 yards deep in 2014" to get a really large, and deep, area that warm.

I know! Maybe submariners' are hanging small electrical heaters out the windows of the subs, and plugged them directly into the nuclear reactor?

All I know for certain, is that this incredibly massive volume of water is the result of man made global warming. I'm being told, day after day, that there is no other possibility.

I wonder if anyone thought about the heat from below?

Active Volcano Found Under Antarctic Ice - National Geographic.

This is a new discover?

From Wikipedia - Mount Erebus "is the second highest volcano in Antarctica (after Mount Sidley) and the southernmost active volcano on earth." Did anyone notice those words - active volcano?

"With a summit elevation of 3,794 metres (12,448 ft)..." That's 2.357 miles high, for us Americans. :o

That may sound high, but Everest is 8,848 meters high. Basically 5.5 miles high.

"Mount Erebus is currently the most active volcano in Antarctica and is the current eruptive zone of the Erebus hotspot.

The Erebus hotspot???

What the heck is THAT?

Glad you asked - "The Erebus hotspot is a volcanic hotspot responsible for the high volcanic activity on Ross Island in the western Ross Sea of Antarctica. Its current eruptive zone, Mount Erebus, has erupted continuously since its discovery in 1841."

The fact of continual climate change, and the belief that WE are solely responsible for it, is like any religion - WE know what we know, and that's that.

Climates do change, and we have to deal with it.

What's going on now is childish.

Making a fortune in buying & selling "carbon credits" is a sham.

Expecting China and third world countries to stop polluting is ridicules.

I posted this, because I truly believe that mankind is stupid to think that we know everything, and can't be wrong.

END NOTE - 1975 Newsweek article

"An April 28, 1975 article in Newsweek magazine was titled "The Cooling World", it pointed to "ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change" and pointed to "a drop of half a degree [Fahrenheit] in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968." The article claimed "The evidence in support of these predictions [of global cooling] has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it."

"The article mentioned the alternative solutions of "melting the Arctic ice cap by covering it with black soot or diverting Arctic rivers..."

Even I thought that, that was a bit extreme.

"The article emphasized sensational and largely unsourced consequences - "resulting famines could be catastrophic", "drought and desolation," "the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded", "droughts, floods, extended dry spells, long freezes, delayed monsoons," "impossible for starving peoples to migrate," "the present decline has taken the planet about a sixth of the way toward the Ice Age."

So what exactly has changed? I dono.

Has anybody ever questioned who is providing these studies? Who is paying for them? and for what reason? Years ago someone of no real significance asked these questions and received the following reply:"Who the F@#$ are you to question the worlds highest paid, highest educated and totally respected authority in the world? We still don't have the answers.

The person who said "We still don't have the answers" was probably fired for not toeing the line.

Like it or not, those who don't stick with the man made global warming Climate Change mantra, become censured, ridiculed, and usually fired.

Lets just say that there is money & power for those who preach the mantra.

Unless you are willing to force the whole world to stop any & all actions that you deem harmful to the environment, very little will be accomplished on a world wide scale.

Imagine this.
You and 99 others are in a closed hot room. Everybody is smoking.

You speak up and say "I'm going to make this a better place by not smoking anymore"!

And your leadership inspires nine others to join you.

You proclaim a victory - You have reduced smoking by a significant amount. Percentage wise, anyway.

The rest keep on smoking in that closed hot room.

Back in April 1982 I was attending a course on curriculum writing in Memphis,TN. Our professor was an old Black gentleman who had earned a Doctorate in Education among his other numerous achievements. One day, while we were working on a lesson development exercise, a classmate got frustrated with a sentence structure dilemma and said to the doctor " How do you expect me to know this stuff; I don't have a college degree?" The professor looked at him for a moment and replied "Let me tell you something son. I have a doctorate and enough other degrees and certificates to completely wall paper my bathroom.
A college degree doesn't mean you're smart, it just means you're educated." That was a very profound statement and I will remember it until the day I die. Since that morning I have seen innumerable incidents where all sorts of educated people opened their mouths and proved him right.

Another statement he made one day was...
"Any college can help you expand your knowledge base but a "good" college is one that makes you aware of how much you don't know.
