Aircraft.configeration problems

I am trying to add different airplanes to my other airplanes and when I put the specs on to the config file it does not let me save it to file. a new window pops up and asks to save or mot to save and tell it to save it keeps on doing the same thing over and over again. what do I have to do? I am Running win8.1 and using Flight Simulator X Deluxe edition.

This is a common problem due to the security features of Win7 & 8. All files installed to the Program Files directories are treated as protected System Files.
One way over it is to move (cut & paste) the Aircraft.cfg file you wish to edit to your Desktop. After saving changes you can move it back again.

As always, please take a backup copy of files before editing them.

The other way of avoiding this is to install FSX in some other folder and not the default folder. Of course it is best if you can install on a drive that does not have your operating system. Having it installed in the default location can present other problems as well. But I know it is a Pain in the rear end to uninstall and reinstall. As long as you do not add a lot of third party software you should not have many problems.
Myself I have a total of 3 hard drives C drive is 80 gigs and has my operating system on it Drive D is a internal 1TB drive and Drive H is a external USB 3.0 1 TB I have FSX installed on drive D and FS9 on Drive H
The advantage of building your system from scratch and not to buy a system from a store.

To stop this problem open windows explorer and navigate to your SimObjects folder in FSX. If you did a default install it should be:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes

In the SimObjects folder right mouse click on the Airplanes folder. A Airplanes Properties window will open, next click on the Security tab. Click on your user name and then click on the edit button next to "To Change Permissions click Edit". Next you will see a Permissions for Airplanes folder open. Click on your user name under the Group or user names: window. Now click on the Edit button next to "To change permissions, click Edit". Next in the "Permissions for Users" window, click the check mark for full control, and then click on the OK button.

After following these procedures you will be able to write to that folder without security issues.

WARNING: BE CAREFULL BECAUSE YOU NOW HAVE FULL CONTROL OF THIS FOLDER. MAKE BACKUPS OF EVERYTHING THAT YOU ARE GOING TO CHANGE.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi there all,

There are many solutions including the ones that have been mentioned here. But perhaps the easiest of all and the most fool-proof is to just change/switch from User to Administrator. Then you can make any and all changes at any time you want to and then go ahead and Save. Then switch back to your User and everything is all done, with no problems. This works with Win 7 and 8.

Dropping UAC right down helps as well.

A little bit harsh? But should be common practice anyway.
Dunno what UAC dos anyway. apart from nagging. I get enough of that at home, there is no ways I'll let my PC jump on that band wagon as well!

UAC provides a level of protection against bad stuff from the Internet, and to help stop those who know not what they do. For those of us who work with MANY computers used by MANY people, it's a very good idea.

A clear explanation, from techtarget.com:

The benefits of UAC are threefold:
1. It ensures that programs are not casually launched as administrator, and therefore any malware that might run because of one of those programs isn't able to make changes to the system.
2. It ensures that programs cannot run as admin without the user knowing about it beforehand.
3. It allows regular users to run administrative functions without needing access to the whole of the admin account to do so.

The sole purpose of having the Program files protected is to prevent altering critical files and programs. As long as you pay attention to things that might pop up when making changes in this area you will not have any problems. For the average user I would not recommend doing this as it could cause problems down the line. Now mind you if you feel comfortable doing this than no problem but this is like telling some one to edit there registry. Messing with this is kind of like playing with a live bomb do something wrong and it will explode.
Myself I know how to read the registry and what it is doing but I am not about to edit or alter it in any way, as all it takes is to make one keystroke error and you can turn your computer into a expensive paper weight.
There is nothing worse than after booting up your computer and you get a message stating it can not find your windows program. Which means you will not be able to use your computer until you can restore your windows. But if you have a store bought System you will not have a copy of windows and Microsoft will not issue you a new key to unlock it. trust me I have been there and done that.
The way I look at it why mess with things like this when all you have to do is to install FSX in some other folder This is by far the best way no chance of making a mistake.
