The influence of the Beatles, not withstanding John Lennon's hugely unpopular and basically inaccurate remark, was then and still is, far-reaching. Music in general is of great economic importance, employing many everywhere, entertainers & performers, music teachers, music stores, instrument sales, etc. Every piece of pop/rock/country etc music you hear today, where ever you hear it, has been influenced by the Beatles, either directly or indirectly.

Both music and religion are here to stay. Do keep in mind that Johann Sebastian Bach was a Christian, employed by his church, and composed a tremendous amount of music for his church during his time. The earliest places to hear music, sometimes maybe the only places, were in a church somewhere, in the days when music and religion were intertwined.

The truth of that comment from Lennon rather depends on where you come from. The original published interview (London I think) drew very little comment although it probably did cause some consternation among UK christians, partly because Christianity was struggling in the UK with falling participation and lack of perceived relevance. UK Christians saw an "Element of Truth" in his comments.

The real anger was in the US.

I do remember the incident although I was rather young. I was an ordinary lad from a working class background, I attended Sunday school and went to a Christian school........but........I knew more people who were fans of the Beatles than I did committed Christians. Even now I know more people who listen to the Beatles or Rock and Roll than go to Church or declare them selves Christian.


I like Humans and each to their own with regard to their faith. So long as they are kind and do constructive things for the right reasons they get my vote.

I haven't personally known anyone who attends a church, synogogue, mosque or any other place of worship for probably 25 years. .... & the ones I befriend are nice people who tend to have a benevolent and fair attitude to life. It doesn't take any religious belief to keep you happy and a nice person. But anyway we don't talk religion here do we!

I do know one or 2 like the Beatles - even after all these years ...... . Personally the original songs are a bit passé for me but some of their melodies are absolute classic and will probably emerge with many interpretations well into the future and still sound great.

Pete, this applies to your friends you mention above; unfortunately, the brain can be afflicted like any other part of the body. This does not mean one needs adhere to a particular religious cult, nor am I suggesting such, but there are many who quite religiously adhere to harmful beliefs. Some need serious help, some get by only with medication and some with just counselling (whether in the medical or religious profession).

I quite agree. Thus far, I've managed to keep my Beetles albums, most of which I was able to buy at discount (as low as $2); I have a phonograph but haven't played them for a long, long while.

While I was in high school (many, many moons ago) I was informed of a group (I've long since forgotten their name) that based their beliefs on some mathematical formulas concerning the basis our existance; their final belief, according to their calculations, was that we don't exist. I never catered to their claim -- but here I am responding to the supposed written word of someone I've never actually seen nor heard, only supposed pictures of said entity... who may not really exist...

Whether you know that something, or someone, is true or not, doesn't mean that it, or they, don't have an impact on your daily life.

There are people who believe that Aristotle, Francis Bacon, and Albert Einstein were real. Never saw a one of them, myself.

Ah, but the scientific belief is that you've held and hold quadrillions of electrons in your body, not just your hand: electrical/electronic theory is that an active electric circuit is the flow of electrons. We are bioelectrical machines: our muscles respond to the electrical impulses sent from the motor controls of our brain (for those of us who have one, anyway ).

I'm certainly not in basic opposition to your statements, either. However, amongst my many exploits, I've also worked in a trauma hospital and in a county nursing home. Neither have I hidden that fact that I was once actively in a (Christian-based) ministry; I also acquainted myself with many other ministries and their beliefs. I've been delivered from, at least avoided, death many times; it's effectively a miracle that I'm here. Some while ago, during a physical check-up at the VA, I was informed that the times I wake up with my entire body tingling as if the circulation had been cut off was that my heart had probably stopped while I slept. In 1987 I had a 'death experience' which makes it difficult for me to deny that there is more to existance than what we see around us...

Ay. Very true, it can't be any other way. Our sensory apparatus is very limited as is the means of processing that info......We cannot say WHAT is there in front of us we can only say what we SEE. 2 very different things. Definitively saying what is real is not possible and we cannot say what is possible either.

'Tis all subjective. Some things are individually subjective i.e. "I'm a handsome chap" (although there is much evidence to support that statement ).....some things are collectively subjective i.e. "Diamonds are hard"
