Back to Santa Catalina Island

Postby OldAirmail » Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:51 pm

A couple of years back, Mr Jetranger brought to my attention the first really great free scenery that I ever had - Catalina Island from Aerosoft.

So I thought to bring it back to light for all those who might have missed it. :D

I'll alternate the Plain FSX and the Aerosoft version.

OldAirMail

Thanks for the shots.......Aerosoft's detailed scenery of Catalina Island is very good..........
I live near there, only about an hour boat ride and I spent the night at Avalon recently where you see the Casino (tall round bldg near the water), which is now is a theater and museum.........
Took a wonderful golf cart tour with my camera in hand.........here's a shot of Avalon, be interesting to fly in FSX and compare with the real thing eh

I probably like flying boats more than the average person. Frequently enough to dedicate a wing tip float UP/DOWN command to a mod that I did last year.

OldAirmail wrote:There are a lot of planes that I like for a lot of different reasons.

But real "world air travel" once belonged to the flying boats.

If you have the time, read Ken Follett's Night Over Water. This book is also carried in many libraries as a download.

I've read it once, and listened to it twice while driving. Either way, it's great.

BTW - These are four switches that I've added to my yoke.
Image

The top right switch lowers and raises the wing tip floats on planes like the Grumman Goose. The light is lit when they're down.

The bottom right switch lowers and raises the rudders on planes like the Beaver. Again, when the rudders are in the down position, the light is lit. Don't want to forget that they're down, you know.

Here it is with the lights off.

You know, jankees, people who just fly jets don't have a clue that they're missing.

And you're right, OZx has some great aircraft/repaints.

Although what the deal is with the busses has me confused ???

Thanks for reminding me about this repaint.

Paul, it hurts me to say this (and please don't pass this around), but I've been having too much fun to get really good at such things. :D

In fact the only thing that I have accomplished is simple navigation at night time & in very bad weather. I love doing that.

But the "small lake/pond" thing has me interested. I take it that you must be able to take off from the pond also? Or is it just to see how small of an area you can land in?

I certainly intend to give it a try. And if I get any good at it I'll let you know.

As it is now I'd probably just make you die of laughter. :D

I just tried it. Didn't work out so well.

Yeppers,

BC around Calgary has lots and lots of small lakes great for interesting landings and of course take off attempts too
Our H_Squad has FSX scenery near there, some of mine too, one called Alpine lake, dock, resort and small lake to test one's skills (great for float planes ..........freeware stuff --> http://hsquad.katuu.com/
