Me, I try to avoid such things as halucinations, although after the 70's...

My primary flight instructor taught me to use my offset vision (especially at night) to acquire moving targets. Do not stare directly at a point, stare to the left or the right and you will gain the visual knowledge to see the bogie... You will see the Mirage!
