Here is what I added/modified:

I added:
[GRAPHICS]
HIGHMEMFIX=1
ForceWindowedVsync=1 (forces Vsync in windowed mode)

(I used affinitymask calculator to find this value)
[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=2

I changed:
[Display]
TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40
UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=30 (locks fps at 30)
WideViewAspect=True

I think that is about it.
Here is the link I used:

Ohhhh my,,, all very interesting.

I see where some simmers are kinda basic generic mode and don't have a problem dumping their FSX for the Steam version.

Boy, I couldn't do that, wouldn't work for me in my case at all.

I've got my Entire FSX Gold / Acceleration edition ( which I still have Boxed edition) , totally and completely severely Tweaked with lots of changes to the FSX CFG file, as well as many custom Textures that I tweaked myself , like sky textures, and some cloud textures and all that INFO displays that used to show up, like Brakes info, and overspeed text in the upper screen,,, all that's been eliminated.

Runway Textures custom tweaked all kinds of stuff.

I don't use REX

I don't use open sky

or any of those other programs that I read about so much in the forum boards of those with problems.

I've yet to have a System crash or the dreaded FSX Crash,,,,,

Then again lotta my scenery is far from Default too,,, have over 350 add on airports on top of whats default.

I have it all backed up on another computer tho , then on actual Disks just in case, along with all 4,900 of my Aircraft add ons that I've injected.

Re-install,,,, :shock: :shock: :? Ohh if only it were that easy as rolling off my lips :shock: !!!

By the way Sim Pilots - with the Hollidays being here and some of you having time off,,,, now would be a Good Time to do some Cleaning Maintenance on your Computers !!!!

Blow out all the DUST and Debris from your Heat Sink , FANS, and if you have one " VIDEO Graphics Card" and its Fans !!!

I have 2 Fans just on my Video Graphics Card and 4 Fans just in my Computer Case .

Every other month I take the time to unplug my Computer Tower and take it out to the work bench in the Aircraft Hanger and take the Air to it, using the Air Compressor - Gentle with the Air tho !!!!

I have a regulator on my Air-compressor so I can vary the Air pressure and I always always always hold on to my Fans with my fingers so they don't spin while I'm blowing the Air around them and the Dust off them and from around them.

I hold the CENTER of the Fan not the actual Blades, reason is, I screwed up a few years ago,, and accidentally bent a FAN Blade outta whack and never did get it back center again, ended up replacing the fan , only cost 15.00 bucks, but still the hassle.

Keep your computer clean and Dust Free and cool, it'll run & operate much better and smoother !! :dance:

ok, first impressions:(Henceforth if I say "FSX" I mean the old install. If I say "FSX-SE" I mean Steam Edition.)

I did my install the laziest way I could think of. I installed FSX-SE, then copy-and pasted my entire FSX folder over to the SE main. I told windows to merge all folders, but not to overwrite anything. Then I went back and chopped a lot of stuff back out. MAIW, JFT360, and JFTX, all my "spares" that are not in the simobjects folder because I'm not currently flying them, and don't use them as AI in FSX-SE. For now I'm gonna make do with stock AI. After I get bored with that again I'll see about my JF Traffic programs.

I call this the "If this thang don't blow up, then pretty much anything will work on it" install.

I think I'm gonna leave my old box set FSX install on the computer, too. I have plenty of space (I deleted FS2004 and GoldenWings prior to FSX-SE install, I never fly them anymore) so I'll probably just use FSX-SE as mostly for multiplayer.

About multiplayer. Not a lot of sessions. Yet. I hope. Hell, it was $5.

About the sim-
Frame rates are up from FSX, but I don't have much scenery installed, so we'll see how the FPS hold up when I get a hog scenery going. Right now I'm staying around 30 with the sliders maxed, and on my old install I was usually around 18. FTR, anything over about 10 fps looks pretty damn good to me usually. Thirty seems like overkill, but I'm not complaining at all if that means it'll still clock 20fps with heavy scenery. Or even 12 fps. :)

The only problems i can report are :
in my currently installed sceneries, the IS3 roads don't seem to be displaying. Object Placement seems to be fine. IDK if this is because the SDK is not the same or what. I'll look into it some more, and report back when/if I fix it.

Also when I go to add scenery, it pops up with the AddonScenery->scenery folder from my old FSX install as the default scenery folder. I have to navigate out of there, back to the Steam folder, the FSX folder, and then activate the scenery. Makes it take about three times as long as it should. If anyone know how to redirect where FSX looks for scenery, let me know plz.

I was gonna just use my old "Addon Scenery" folder and tell FSX-SE to look there, but it didn't like that, and would tell me that scenery on line so-and-so wasn't there. The sceneries it told me weren't there still displayed, but I got the error messages everytime I activated any scenery. So I copied and pasted the old folder into the Steam ->FSX folder and activated it from there and FSX-SE seemed to like that better.

If I find anymore bugs or quirks I'll let y'all know, I haven't loaded up nearly all my payware planes yet. Just haven't had time.

If it is setup to allow me to use my current install of FSX in a multiplayer environment I would be more than happy to rejoin steam. What I would really love would be steam adding CFS2 with combat arenas. As long as there isn't any combat I am happy enough with the AI aircraft FSX already has.

its not. that I can tell.

I hope some CFSs appear on steam too. THAT would be a lot of fun. Maybe if FSX does well for them, we'll see it happen now the proper channels are open.

I was keen to pay $5 to fly multiplayer. If people start ATCing again it will be a lot of fun again. If not: oh well, I'm out half a six pack of decent beer.

What do you have in the way of Sim hardware such as yokes or rudder peddles?

Can you use a Saitek Pro Flight Instrument Panel?

So far I must say that it's sounding much better than I thought it would.

As to the problems, I think that they're to be expected in the beginning.

Great questions. I meant to address this in my earlier post and it slipped my mind.

I use Saitek X52 (not Pro) and Pro Flight Yoke System (yoke but not throttle quadrant) and Saitek rudder pedals. I loaded my "FSX-Airplane" config for the X52, and it worked fine (I use pretty much the default key map with the X52 programmed accordingly). I have a Saitek keyboard and cheap wireless keyboard that I position on either side of me so I access them if necessary. I have had to tweak some sliders for sensitivity in FSX-SE, but I honestly couldn't tell you what the corresponding slider in FSX is set to. That's about it. I don't have instrument panels (yet), but I should, with all the other Saitek stuff I have. Can't help you there.

When I fly an aircraft with yokes I fly with the yoke, when I fly airplanes with a stick I use the X52. When I fly rotorcraft I use the X52 with the throttle axis reversed. When I use the yoke I move the X52 stick over to the left side of the HOTAS throttle and still use it for flaps, switches, etc.

So far I'm really pleased with FSX-SE, but its really early to be doing anything but knocking on wood.

ALso, I suspect that my scenery folder issue has to do with me ripping the FSX main and c&p-ing it into FSX-SE. If somebody comes along later and tries my "IF this thang don't blow up, pretty much anything will work on it" method, I'd recommend trying to activate the bulk of your add-on scenery before you copy&paste FSX over SE. Holler back and let us know if that is where the scenery folder jumps ship.

Sounds great, thank you. :clap:

It I didn't have TWO copies of FSX, I'd definitely give them $5.

Same here.. I bought fsx many years ago. but lost one of the disk's.. So every time I re install windows or have to re install fsx for some reason. I have to use torrents and even tho I bought the game I feel like I'm doing something wrong.. So having spent 5 bucks and never have to worry about that again is FREAKING Awesome

This Steam version is way above my expectations if I'm honest, frame rates are much higher than I've ever been able to achieve before and everything is running a lot smoother than I ever saw from my disc version, which I uninstalled a couple of years ago after growing tired of it. I probably would never have bothered reinstalling if I hadn't read all the info on Steam and thought for this price it's got to be worth another try.
I can tell ya now, I'm enjoying FSX now much more than I've ever been able to in the past and the Dovetail guys are still working on getting it even better.
I had a number of download add ons that I had bought from various sites installed in to my disc version, all I've had to do to add them to FSX_SE is re-download and hit the .exe, so far every single one of them has found the correct destination folder without me even having to redirect them. I've got Aerosoft and Just Flight planes all working great, Orbx Global, REX and a whole load of freeware stuff and pretty much all of it is brilliant and runs without a problem. There are two problems I've encountered so far and that's all, I'm not even sure if these problems are Steam related...maybe!
If any of you guys has any ideas about this I welcome suggestions and advice......
Problem 1 - After installing Orbix my scenery looked more awesome than I've seen it before apart from there are like little black boxes or something dotted about on the ground, I'm thinking it's something to do with street lighting because they seem very uniformed along major roads and highways but a little more spread out around towns. If I can work out how to get a screenshot on I'll show you what I mean.
Problem 2 - is my set of Aero Commander aircraft which used to work perfectly well in my old install, they are now showing up as plain white with no detail and no textures what so ever, they still perform as they always did but just sit there looking like a ghost plane.
If anyone knows why this should be happening please give me some ideas....

Thanks

I don't see any reason to switch to SE and fly online unless they make it multiplayer. And since I am not an airliner nut the only way I am interested in online multiplayer is if it is air combat or racing. My brother sits in a closet at least five nights a week as a simulated air traffic controller or flying in a simulated commercial traffic environment. I don't understand the attraction and I guess I never will.

I will stick with my FSX Gold acceleration and continue to fly offline until they bring back fighter ace or air warrior.

I used to like flying backcountry areas where other bush planes were operating on multiplayer. And while we didn't have air-to-air combat I have flown both CASEVAC choppers and/or their cover over several MCDMIL sceneries in multiplayer.

There are lots of things to do in multiplayer besides fly big iron approaches.

FSX SE is multiplayer. That's the whole reason I parted with $4.99
