Out of memory?

I've had FSX for quite some time but recently when I've started it up, it has on occasion shown the plane screen with the plane but the textures are missing and a message states that I am out of available memory.

Have I loaded up FSX with too many addons?

I doubt if the number of addons are the issue here unless you have added complex scenery or textures and have the sliders turned up to high. Or have you added a lot of AI flights that can cause issues as well. What are your system specs? how much ram do you have? what are you using for a video card? and last but not least is What version of Windows are you using? 32 bit Windows Usually causes the out of memory problem. With a 32 bit Operating system you can only put 4 gigs of ram and your system only sees 3.2 gig of that. The only thing you can do here is to turn down the sliders and tweak your FSX CFG file.
FSX is a CPU Ram and GPU hungry game. In order to run FSX full out is to update your system. That is what I did and I did not spend that much Money about $800 But I all ready had a good case.

4076 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Slot 'DIMM3' has 2048 MB
Slot 'DIMM1' has 2048 MB
Slot 'DIMM4' is Empty
Slot 'DIMM2' is Empty

Would adding memory help? I'm running Win7 64bit.

Don't really know what your specs are or what addons you have installed or what all is running in the background on your computer, but the way FSX is these days with the current addons I would say the sweet spot for memory is 8 gigs, 2 sticks of memory. It certainly gave my system a kick in the pants.

I have learned that some systems work well with 4 slots of memory, - - - however I believe it is true that the majority of systems work much better with just two slots filled. I'm not sure if this is an FSX thing or what, but everything I have tried has had better results with two slots.

Hi,

You can certainly add 2 more 2gb dims but you need to make sure they are the same spec as the 2 you have already, or at least within the spec for your MB, your system will run the memory at the speed of the slowest ones you have.

Check you motherboards (MB) manual, you maybe able to add more memory that's larger size than what you already have.

If your going to go for more memory then add the highmemfix in the Graphics section of your fsx.cfg.

What your hoping to do is not really give fsx more memory (it's a 32bit proggy) but give your overall system more memory to use which
will/may then allow more for FSX.

Drop your graphics settings within FSX to min, including the AI traffic such as ships ferries cars etc then increase the scenery complexity
till you get a good frame rate and no memory issues.

You could disable some panels of aircraft you don't fly all that often, this will help memory wise and speed up the time taken to get
to the main menu.

I run a simple bat file that renames them before running fsx then renames em back afterwards.

For each aircraft you don't want to fly, rename the panel to something like 01panel, that aircraft will not then appear
in your 'select aircraft' list but beware that you may also lose others aliased to the same panel.

Also don't rename panels of default flight aircraft.

Memory wise, if you PC is a regular brand, hp, advent, dell etc, sure you know what I mean, then try Crucial Technology
website for checking what you can fit on your MB or check MB manufactures website.

How much memory you can hang is completely dependent on your mother board. And the CPU it uses also plays a roll in how much it can see.
I can hang 32 gigs of memory at 4600 hz. 4 sticks of 8 GIG But every mother board is different

Heavy reading I know, but carefully read through here. Apparently it is more about VAS, and less about RAM.

Done a check on my FSX -



Using almost 1.5GB VAS. This is inflight, running ORBX Global, Orbx England and Orbx Shuttleworth airfield.

(PC = i7 2600k, 3.4Ghz with 8 Gb ram)

Sorry, I must have missed where he said what kind of motherboard he had.

And yes. There are a lot of variables to be considered. But when we have almost no info we have to start somewhere.

And if he has 64bit Win 7 Starter edition, that will reduce his possibilities.

Never mind that he's running both his computer & FSX off that 4gb.


But some how I think that going higher than the basics will not be helpful at this point.

Never mind getting into matched memory and memory timing.

We simply need to know a lot more.


I have 16gb of DDR3 and crashed Prepar3d while flying over New York City X Scenery with all my sliders set to the max.

I know that P3d is still (mostly) a 32bit program, but it does farm out some procedures, making it something of a hybrid.


Depending on what his settings are on, the scenery he was flying over, and how long his flight was, it's highly probably that he had an OOM with only 4GB.
