Well, Folks,

Postby H » Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:28 am

Fozzer's warning hit us early on our U.S. Thanksgiving; the Great God we call Mother Nature dumpied heavy wet snow to rebuke me for complaining that my birth month was so cold and drab...
Many had to forego their intended home-cooked meal. (I had one cold leg of chicken as the inside temperature dropped to the 40s, below freezing after I left). In the dim ambient light, I shovelled out my car @ 4 in the morning but the plow eventually arrived to fence it in with snow 3 times as high (up to the car's windows) as Mommy Nature had. By the time I had it cleared and still no power, I managed a call to the jobsite (fortunately, it's a motel) and was told we were nearly sold out but there was a room I could shower and change into my work suit for my night shift.
Power is back on for me (still not restored in many places) but my refrigerator and floor is a mess...
a lot of cleanup to do...
For any in need of heat, shelter or any other debacle, I pray all is resolved soon...

You have my deepest sympathy, (but not the snow), @H... :( ...!

I note that you seem to have forsaken your trusty 2-wheeled, peddle-power, Bicycle, (with its attendant Carbide lighting system), for some form of motorised transport now!... :o ...!

Fortunately, for me, whilst preparing for my Sunday Motorcycle ride around the Kingdom of Mercia, (ruled over by King Offa), reveals a bright blue sky, still air, and an outside temperature of 52 degrees Farenheit!... ...!

Not bad for the last day of November, and the Land of the Angles!

I just hope it stays that way until next Spring!

Paul....I love cosy warmth!... ...!

P.S..."Shift Work" will do your health no good at all!... ...!

Heck, if you fridge wasn't working, just open the kitchen window, and the fridge door! The stuff in the fridge will stay cold!

I stick beer and sodas out on my front porch to save the fridge electricity when we have snow deep enough on the front porch! We just burrow through to the stairs, give us a little path to get out, and nice walls to shove soda cans into!

Thankfully, I also have a generator outside I can plug into the house when we loose power. Just step out on the back porch, give it a yank, and plug the big fat cable into the plug on the house! Voila! power for about a week or 10 days straight use, or we can use it intermittantly (this house is insulated!) warm up the house, AND our waterbed, and chill down the fridge, shut it off and bingo, fuel for almost 3 weeks! We also have several Coleman Lanterns (the kind with silk mantles, not the LED versions), camp stoves and the like. Not only do they provide light and cooking they make HEAT! Great inventions :) Save a lot of generator fuel too!

Hope everything melts out ok for ya! OH! One note: Invest in a good (ie Toyota!) 4WD vehicle maybe? They can save ya a ton of shoveling! Just drive up and out, and off ya go.
Good luck anyway!

Well...

...my Sunday ride in the clear blue sky was a bit deceiving....

Even though the temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit appeared to be comfortable in theory, in practice, my 100 mile all-round trip was uncomfortably cold, even though I was well protected in my winter woolly underwear!

This is when I yearn for that 100 Degree Utah temperature...just for a nice change!.... ...>>>>>

My usual daily rides are going to be severely limited now, until the warmer Spring weather arrives!

Paul....Battered Cod Fish, and Chips for Supper... ...!

...and a couple of glasses of Vino, now that I'm not riding again until tomorrow!... ...!

About fifteen years ago a hurricane knocked out our power for eleven days.

Having been a Boy Scout in the '60s I was prepared - the day before it hit I did all my laundry. My wife didn't.

Anyway, ever since then I've had a generator.

Welcome to them :)

Honestly, even though we had 360 riding days per year in Yuma, it can be tough when it's 127 in the shade, and after an hour's ride one enters a gas station, and one passes out from the heat :confusion-seeingstars: :sad-fever: . Even after 20 some years (At the time, 30 total :blech: )

I like it here a LOT more. There comes a point at which there is nothing left to remove to cool off, where as one can always add another layer or two. One may look like the Michelin Man, but one is WARM!

The way I look at it anyway :) Then again, I despised Yuma with a passion...dead, dessicated, miserable place...But I grew up in Woodside, a rain forest...

As always, these threads encourage me to explore various areas of North America...
...and today's flight exploration is in the State of Oregon (Where Pat now lives)!...>>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oregon

Amazingly diverse, from the lush coastal region in the west, to the dessert region in the east.
Bordering Washington in the north, California and Nevada in the south, and Idaho in the east.
A temperate climate overall.
A fascinating history from very long ago...
..and an interesting variety of recent? immigrants....mostly German.

Time to get my Oregon road map out again and traverse some of its highways and byways, in my Cessna 150...as I do.... :D ...!
...especially the more remote, eastern, Idaho side.

Paul...more exploring to do!.... ...!

..and my exploration aids...
