Some great deals on Area 51 Helis!!!

Postby jcj78 » Sat Nov 29, 2014 3:29 pm

I am not affiliated with any sim retailer except as a customer. I do try to post good deals that I see for other SimV users when I notice a great one in an email, and boy do I get a lot of sim sale emails this time of year.

When I fly helis, I turn all the realism sliders down to easy, and usually activate autorudder. You still have to use the torque pedals, but I find helicopters quite manageable when they are operated like this. Other than this all I do is invert the throttle axis and pull back on the X52 throttle for the collective.

Anyway, http://www.fspilotshop.com/index.php?ref=372 has all Area 51 helis for $9.98 each. This is half off the regular price of $19.95.

I have the UH-1Y Venom (Super Huey) and the M-47G Chinook. I like both these models, and I enjoy flying them. They are not "new" models, both have been around for a while, and there are a few repaints available for either.

Both look great from the outside:

True to Area51 form they have pretty simple VCs. They look great, don't get me wrong. THere just are not a lot of clickable switches, and fairly basic flight and nav instruments. Start up? Autostart. No complex start/shutdowns here. Some people like it, some find it lacking.

Neither helicopter comes with an autopilot, but both work ok with the AFCP heli autopilots.

The following are from the MH-47G as it flies cover over a training "village" near the MHTB, a fictional joint forces training facility for high altitude heli training:

Visibility from the VC is good as we arrive on scene.

I use Ray Nunweiler's "no seats" mod on some of my repaints. This is a fictional US Navy livery depicting a Chinook from the USS Enterprise:

Whereas the repaint depicting a bird from the USS Ronald Reagan still has the seats

If the VC looks familiar, its because all the Area 51 heli vc's I've seen have nearly indentical instrumentation, and similar lack of clickable switches. They still don't look bad at all, and for the price........

THE UH-1Y comes with several loadout depictions. This is "FULL LOAD" which depicts a five man squad of infantrymen.
Image

When the doors are closed, the door gunner sits back, and the minigun is rotated and pinned to a foward firing position. I haven't set up a smoke 'gun' or '2.75" rocket' effect, but either would be easy to do.

Flying and landing from the VC is pretty easy in these helis.

Also there is a "SNIPER TEAM" loadout, where your passengers are a bolt-rifle toting sharpshooter and his DMR carrying spotter.
Image
Image

And a "TACTICAL TEAM" loadout, where you have four guys sitting "Littlebird" style in the floorboard.

From a camp in Afghanistan, I pull the collective and let her climb vertically.

I give it the first bump forward on the cyclic

And its easy to climb out with just a little forward pressure on the cyclic.

There is also a "CLEAN" model that has no passsengers or door crew, and also has no external weapons.

Almost forgot this Columbia Helicopters repaint that I have. It looks good, though I have to wonder what CH are getting themselves into when I see the Vulcan cannons hanging out the left side.

Nice review via screenshots. I've had a few models purchased from other sales and added both the 47 and Venom to the hangar with this most recent price reduction. Typical A51, great externals, but lacking on the VC's and flight dynamics. I found the AH-64D to have many unused VC switches that I started looking at ways to add FSX functions to them. Not an airfile guru, but would like to get them somewhat close to RW specs, the MH-47 is all stock Jetranger for the most part, to include the cruise flight left wing down. Agree on the autopilot, 1st thing I add to all my helos. Plently of specs are unclassified for the Venom, guess A51 just ran out of time. As a RW rotary guy, still worth the $9USD to add to the FS hangar.

May add some of the gauges from the freeware T. Woods/Bros CH-47, the "glass" is more functional then the ones A51 provided. Got to make some FSX based missions to add to these, might take one's eyes away from the lacking VC's in these models.

Nice pics! Great sceneries too!

Just so you know, when I was in the Corps, we called the "Chinook" the "Sh*&-hook" . Apparently they had a small problem with breaking in the middle...Not many of us ever wanted a ride in one. And if the blades ever got out out of sync (it happens!) well...*shudder*...all I an say.

If you want a great helo add-on, go to Hovecontrol.com and DL their HTR x1.5 (Helicopter Total Realism, appropriate name!). Greatest thing since the collective for flying helo's in a sim. Once you get it, you will turn all your realisms back up to full bore...That's how good it is! I fly helos a lot in FS9 (yes, it works great in FSX too!), and I never load one up without HTR!
Anyway, just a thought to try to improve the experience :) And it does, no question! Real life helo pilots of all sorts both tested and helped devolp it. It make flying a helo about as real to life as can be made in a sim. Corrects a lot of the failures sims have with modeling choppers and the way the fly.

Ok, ok, I'll shut up about it...

Good advice, Pat. Jordan Moore has lots of great stuff over at HC. You may have seen some HC Lib1 objects in those screenshots, I use them all the time. I use HTR when I'm gonna be doing ALOT of heli flying in a short time, especially if I'm gonna be using slingloads much. The rest of the time I just drop sliders on standard FSX config because I mostly fly airplanes, I just mess with helicopters when I get a wild hair.

HTR wouldn't get you "realistic" flight models for these A51 helis anyway, because like Victory103 pointed out, the guys at Area 51 just cobbled up the Jetranger .air files. I downloaded AAMV2 last week, once I gt some experimentation with it under my belt I am gonna tackle these two helis in that regard. I know a couple Chinook pilots (Huntsville is the headquarters of US Army Aviation and Missile Command, and they do a lot of training here out of KMDQ) and most of the Super Huey numbers are available, like Victory103 pointed out.

Agree with PhantomTweak about HTR, as one of those RW guys(H-60) that try to help out, it's a must have for flight sim helo flyers. The nickname still sticks with the Chinook, but as a former USN guy I didn't want to ride in Phrogs (H-46's).

Sadly no HTR profiles for these models, the only A51 I know that was tweaked was the OH-58D KW. Reading other threads, seems maybe they purchased the models and then sold them without much additional input. So much potential, I feel the 2 best are the AH-64 and MH-47, at least candidates for gauge coding.

Is that scenery out? I've found some FS9 based "Mog" scenery that should work in FSX.

Which scenery? There's a bunch of different ones in my screenshots. Some are released freeware, some are freeware and then spruced up further with IS3. If you see something you like I'll get you some .bgl's that will get you pretty close.
