Drummers, guitarists, singers, bassists, whatever!!!!

Postby Colt1775 » Sun Sep 14, 2014 10:39 pm

Hey welcome to my thread! Just so yall know this isn't my first account, forgot information to my last one which had tons of stuff on it which I can't get back to :/

Anyways, this thread welcomes all discussion about music, whether you're a singer, drummer, or whatever! Feel free to just talk if you want (I may need help figuring out something for an acoustic guitar project I've been working on).

So here's some stuff about myself. I am a drummer/guitarist. I'm not exactly the best in the world though but I'm getting there! Been playing the drums for about a year and a half self taught. Same with guitar. My style of drumming is that of Skillets drummer (She is a beast!!!! Don't hate!) as for my guitaring style it's just freestyle. As I said before I'm not the best but I can put together a soft riff or whatever it's called similar to the beginning of Johnny Cashes version of Hurt.

I primarily play for my church group whenever the main drummer isn't there.... sadly I get the stuff that's extra slow :/ Oh well one day I'll get a quick song to play lol

Okay so without a doubt the best drummer in the history of ever is ole one arm from Def Leppard. Thou shalt not debate it :P

Now. Feel free to post music peeps and peeplettes! :D

Ginger Baker (Cream, Blind Faith)

It's OK. You're young. You'll learn.

Ginger Baker is still performing & recently appeared at a small venue in my home town. I was never a big fan. His mentor was a legendary drummer named Phil Seamen who I met a couple of months before he died in 1972. Years of drug & alcohol abuse had taken its toll but he was different man when he got behind a drum kit. Unfortunately there isn't much footage available. Here's a brief clip --> http://youtu.be/58yKbUu2_Ac

There's plenty of good drummers around. One of my favourites is session man Simon Phillips who was chosen by The Who as a replacement for Keith Moon for the live performance of Tommy in LA in 1989. You might like to watch this when you have an hour or so to spare. Also featuring the legendary John Entwhistle on bass guitar. http://youtu.be/58yKbUu2_Ac

...absolutely agree about John Entwhistle Hagar.

Saw Ginger Baker at my local pier ballroom when he was with "Baker Gurvitz Army", a brilliant drummer.

I'm also a longterm fan of the Who, I was fortunate enough to see them a couple of times in the 70's. Moon was in a different league to other rock drummers, I'll not say he was better because comparison seems pointless. He was unique, him and Entwhistle (who was also in a league of his own) were the driving force behind many brilliant live performances.

This track isn't live but it was their best single by miles, loads of drums on it. Why tap a drum once when you can smash it to pieces:

Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Robbie Krieger (Doors), Martin Barre (Jethro Tull), Robert Fripp (King Crimson), Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), and so many more I can't think of right now.
OK, let's not forget American blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield.

Mitch Mitchell (Hendrix' 1st drummer), Ginger Baker, Jon Bonham, Clive Bunker (Tull), and again, many more. Oh yeah, Michael Giles (original King Crimson).

Bass players: My ex-bass player rated Entwhistle as the best. McCartney, of course. I can't comment too much on bassists, not familiar enough with bass.

Keyboardists: Ray Manzarak (Doors), Rick Wakeman, again, others, I'm sure.

So many it's hard to think of all.

My credits: Guitarist in rock groups 01.67 - 05.73 Miami area, then studied classical guitar and dabbled in jazz, now studying Baroque harpsichord repertoire.

Guitar since 1964, keyboards equivalent of 12 or so years.

.....yep all of those too.

Since Mr Entwhistle has been mentioned in 3 posts perhaps a video is in order. Here he is playing Won't Get Fooled Again, his bass has been isolated. There are some dodgy bits of editing on this and it doesn't always sync but it demonstrates his tech. Starts slow.

John Entwistle was an English musician, songwriter, singer, film and music producer, who was best known as the bass guitarist for English rock band The Who. He was the only member of the band to have formal musical training. His aggressive lead sound influenced many rock bass players. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Who in 1990.

John Entwistle's instrumental approach used pentatonic lead lines, and a then-unusual treble-rich sound ("full treble, full volume") created by roundwound RotoSound steel bass strings. He was nicknamed "The Ox", as well as "Thunderfingers" – because his digits became a blur across the four-string fretboard. In 2011, a Rolling Stone reader poll selected him as the greatest bassist of all time. The Biography Channel has declared that John Entwistle is considered by many to be the best bass guitarist that ever lived, and that it is often said that he did for the bass what Jimi Hendrix did for the guitar.

The Real Me, playing a bass like it's a lead guitar.

Thank you for info re: John Entwistle, Webb. That backs up what my ex-bassist, no mean bassist himself, said about Entwistle, but whereas my friend only said, "He's the best, period", that detail explains it very well.

Being a guitarist, drummer, pianist, bassist, singer I love almost all kinds of music.

First off, I'm a HUGE Elvis Presley fan so his original lineup of musicians which included Scotty Moore (lead guitar); D.J. Fontana (Drums) & the late Bill Black are tops for the early days of rock and roll.

I'm also a big fan of his TCB Band which included:

James Burton: Lead guitarist who also worked with Ricky Nelson among hundreds others

John Wilkinson: Rhythm guitarist who was also signed to RCA at the same time Elvis was.

Ronnie Tutt: Drums. (I also like guys such as Dave Weckle, Mitch Mitchell, Gene Pello, etc.)

Jerry Scheff: Bass (Jerry also played on The Doors 1971 album, "L.A. Woman"). Jerry left the band to get himself cleaned up from substance abuse in February, 1973 but finally returned (thank, God!) in April, 1975. However, by then things music wise had literally been on "autopilot" for at least two years and would stay that way for the rest of Elvis's touring years until he died on August 16, 1977).

Glen D. Hardin: Arguably the best pianist Elvis had for his TCB Band in the 1970s.

Floyd Cramer: Greatest pianist in country music history!

Eric Clapton: "Cocaine"; "Layla"; "Tears In Heaven"...many others....need I say more?

Jimi Hendrix: "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" AWESOME!

Clarence White: Acoustic bluegrass and electric guitarist with the Byrds. His electric guitar is now owned and played nightly by Marty Stuart who I had the opportunity to open two shows for with a band I work with on July 17, 2008. I also was able to strap "Clarence" around my neck and play it - AWESOME! It's a HEAVY guitar, though, because it has the prototype B-bender inside of it, hence the extra-thick body.

Marty Stuart: Literally, a walking encyclopedia of country music history and preservation!

Jimmy Olander of country group "Diamond Rio"

The late Danny Gatton - what a loss to the guitar world!!

Roy Buchanan - Another huge loss to the music and guitar world!!!

Chet Atkins: The best of the best!!!

Brent Mason

Brad Paisley

Neil Peart - Drummer with RUSH!! I first saw him play recently on a YT video on Letterman and was blown away by how great he is!!

Lynyrd Skynyrd - the original band from 1970-1973!! I can't stand the "tribute band" even though Gary Ro$$ington is the only member of the original band alive.

Jim Croce - amazing singer/poet/guitarist who tragically died in a plane crash in September, 1973.

Gram Parsons: A great singer with a taste for drugs that led to his untimely death on September 21, 1973.

That's all I can think of for now as my favorites.....
