Good on yer Matt. I say the same thing about my old Royal Enfield. I can prove it. I bet I can retime the engine in 15 mins flat when the Mag shaft slips on the taper gear. O, I forgot, this year I'm working on a portable step to get my leg over. Funny how the seat gets taller every year.

I've got to the age now that I have to grab my leg with both hands and help it up and over the seat on my bike!
Nonchalantly swinging a leg over no longer works, for fear of the whole plot collapsing!

Royal Enfield!....One of my first of many bikes after passing my test in 1950...a 1949 Royal Enfield 350cc Bullet...and they still make them now in India!

I have to admit the black box can be a pain, but on the up side you can tailor the box to how you feel like riding via your laptop by changing your power band from low to medium or high RPM range. isnt mapping beautiful

The only thing that worries me about these new-fangled black boxes, is that if there is a fault anywhere on the bike, you have to take it to a specialist garage and pay the specialist mechanic to get his special computer out, identify the fault, and charge you loadsa money for the experience!
...like they do with new motor cars with engine management systems...
...and if the black box has gone belly-up, it will cost you more than the bike is worth to replace it!

No more tinkling with the simple Carburettor, Contact breaker points, etc, etc, to get the bike running again at little, or no cost!

The price of fancy technology...!

Have you noticed how they fill the black box with pitch so that you need a sledgehammer to take it apart? I guess thats to stop anyone from doing their own repairs. I'm sure someone has already carefully reverse engineered the software and made available an alternative "grey" box.

You can buy pattern ones on eBay for most bikes nowadays along with de-restrictor plug ins to get past the Japanese grey import bikes that have been restricted. Someone, somewhere will always find a way to undercut the manufacturer and make a few quid
My new ignition coil was just under £20, however one from Kawasaki would have cost £75 and taken 3 weeks to get here from Japan. My pattern one arrived in 2 days from being ordered on eBay. Nuff said

Is Kara a fuel injected bike, with the accompanying "Black Box" full engine management system, or just good old-fashioned carburettors, and CDI ignition?
Most of the modern bikes, as well as the EMS electronics, being fuel injected, are also fitted with catalyst exhaust systems (also controlled by the EMS) to comply with the European/California! clean air rules!
Looking at the wiring diagrams for a typical EMS system, shows that it is highly complex, with multiple sensors dotted all around the bike!
Lots of things to go wrong, when you are in the middle of Death Valley!... ...!
