Up the West Coast

Postby CHUCK79 » Sat Jul 12, 2014 11:08 pm

Modlerbob inspired me to make a little journey of my own......
Planning to fly from the San Francisco Bay area in California to Anchorage, Alaska up the West coast in real weather using various aircraft.
Probably 30 to 60 minute hops so it'll take a few flights

This is the Waco Staggerwing starting out at CL77 (Boony Dodge Village) and ending at O69 (Petaluma Municipal) flying over the SF Bay area.

Waitin' for the sun to come up.....

In the air at the crack of dawn.

Over the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge with San Fran' in the background.
Image

Bringin' the Staggerwing back to Earth at O69 in a bit of a crosswind.
Image

Hop 2
Thanks 4 lookin'.....hopefully I'll stick to my plan. I get easily sidetracked :?

From San Francisco to Anchorage in Alaska, for that distance I think I would select my Beech Baron 58TC to cut down on the time taken....(Which I used for my Route 66 trip.)....
...or if I am in a real hurry to get there, my speedy Bombardier Learjet 45...!

Both easy to manage!

Paul.....occasionally impatient!... ...!

Central Oregon is full of nice gun, privacy, and beer loving people Paul 8-)

The coast of Oregon is where all the hippies reside obsessed with peace, love, green energy, and saving the Earth...probably tofu too..bleh

Nice shots Chuck!

What Staggerwing is this? Payware or freeware?

PS its the Beech Staggerwing
An absolute classic airplane. If you go to Oshkosh for the big show, you will see a nice gathering of 6+ Staggerwings with WACOs, Stearmans, Howard DGAs, Stinsons, and DeHavillands, and all those other wonderful 30s era planes. Each one a work of art 8-)

Or you could swing by the Mounted Patrol Grounds, and visit the house I grew up in :)
Plenty of landing room for a chopper in the lower ring if you're careful!

I wonder if my Koi in the pond in the backyard is still alive...
Thing grew from almost an inch long when I brought it home from the Fair in Calistoga, summer of '74, to almost 4 feet long by the time I left home...I named it Mark Spitz, for obvious reasons...

Just as an aside, Pat.....
Interesting aerial shot...
I notice, with much fear and trepidation, that your house like many other houses and properties in the USA are built amongst dense trees, scrub, etc, inviting total destruction in the event of the common seasonal Wildfires, as is happening now in various parts of California!
The area rarely seems to be cleared for fire prevention before building commences!
I recall the Lake Tahoe disaster from a few years ago.
Tinder-dry trees and houses don't mix comfortably together.
I regularly follow the Kron 4, etc, news aftermath of such Wildfires and its effect on homes and properties, and I keep asking the question...why?... ...!

I have a couple of very small trees and bushes in my garden, kept well away from my house, for safety.. ;) ...!

Paul...mostly tree-less.... ...!

Honestly, I can't recall ever seeing or even reading about a forest fire of any sort there. The trees are mostly redwoods, and they just don't burn. The bark is a natural version of asbestos, without the harmfull side effects. On rare occaisions, one may be struck by lightning, causing a small fire burining the wood inside of the tree out, making almost a tree-cave sort of thing (nifty place to get out of the reain or hide from others in!), but generally the other tres don't catch or burn much. The area is also classed as a rainforest, and it do rain. A lot. A LOT. Kinda slows down things like that a great deal.
So all in all, lovely place, fire safe. Having said that, the western edge of the San Andreas fault does run along our eastern property line, about 1/2 way to the house to the east, and runs north/south. When it finally decides to really turn loose, then the area might be a tad less livable...but in the time since 1964 that I can remember the area, no natural problems along the wild-fire problem line I can recall at all.
I spent most of my childhood wandering the woods, and loved every second of it too, but never even gave a thought to such things as fires.

@Chuck: I apologise for sort of sidetracking your thread! We now retun exclusive control to you and your shots alone, I promse. Waiting for leg 3 with bated breath.

Great flights and fair skies to all!
Pat☺
