Fifteen Minute Speech

Postby Flying Trucker » Mon Feb 24, 2014 8:58 am

Good morning all... <<q

The Old Girl and I listened to the speech from one of our grandson's who is thirteen years old.

The speech was part of the English Course for Public Speaking. Each student in the class chose their own topic which had to be delivered in front of the class and had to be at least fifteen minutes long.

A student was chosen to represent his/her class in the school auditorium in front of teachers and fellow students.

Our grandson without any help from his mom, dad and grandparents did all the research himself, his speech was in chronological order about the use of Bungee Cords prior to World War One to present time and used on Aircraft. He came in first place on Thursday past. I think now he competes against other students from other schools in the District.

We did not hear his speech until yesterday at the bugsmasher field which he gave in front of some of some other Old Retired Rocking Chair Flying Geezers.

He never looked at his reference cards once, he kept us interested, many liked his reference to the movie, "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" and he spoke with ease as if he was having a normal conversation.

He composed his speech after examining the worn Bungee Cords from the wheel/skis to the airframe on his dad's Cessna 185. Prior to that he had no idea what he was going to talk about.

Well I am pleased as punch, it certainly shows my grandson takes after me and not his grandmother...

Can't remember my fifteen or twenty minute speech now, but I think it had to do with the use of horses during war, on the farm and the commercial use like pulling milk and bread wagons...

Oh and yes I did get in a hour or so flight in a Fleet Canuck on skis yesterday, Mother Earth looks so neat and clean when flying over the country side.
My friend asked me if I wanted to fly but I was busy looking at the scenery and eating a ham and cheese sandwich with green onions... ;)
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Hats of to him  I have to speak to 10 year olds every other year at my wife's school when the Subject of aviation comes up. I have a laptop, projector and lots aircraft bits to show them. I have to speak for 45 minutes.............at the end I am knackered, mentally and physically. No way I would swap jobs with my wife....!

Thanks for the reply Matt...much appreciated... ;)

I am sure you could talk for hours Matt in front of any group about aircraft...

I enjoyed public speaking and feel that students should do two public speaking projects a year. Perhaps a twenty (20) minute and then a thirty (30) minute on the topics of their own choosing.

I remember having to give a five minute speech on a topic chosen by an instructor. There was no prep time, you were in the class and the instructor would give a topic off the top of his head... :o

Mine was how to or boiling an egg.

Well it only takes three minutes to boil an egg... so I had to talk about the type of pots etc.

It sure does teach one to think on their feet in front of others... ;)

I'm affraid, if see just one face, looking strange at me with that "cool" saying, "what on earth is going on here", my mind will forget everything, and i might throw something in that face direction

A long time ago I worked in a hospital ER, and was a volunteer fireman.

As well as teaching two types of CPR (American Heart Assn. and Red Cross CPR were both a little different back in the 1970s), I also taught Advanced First Aid for the Red Cross.

Teaching CPR wasn't a problem at all.

BUT the first time that I started an Advanced First Aid class all by myself, I started to lock up with stage fright.

I was staring at 20 people and didn't want to say a word.

Suddenly, I realized that I was the instructor. And if I wanted to call a break, I could do so at any time.

After that thought, the pressure was off me, and speaking was no longer a problem. :D

Hi Kurt... <<s

A friend of mine told me one time how he overcame his fear of Public Speaking.
He joined a Service Club like the Lions or Knights of Columbus.
After a year of helping out at the one night a week Bingos he started calling the numbers.

He soon overcame his fear of speaking in public.

How did that help you I asked him :?:

He said just imagine you are elevated three feet above two hundred and fifty women.
They are smoking cigarettes, have in their hand a cup of hot coffee and all of them glaring at you at the same time to just go ahead and don't call that numbered ball I need... :o

After a year of calling Bingo when he was giving a speech or lecture and he looked out at the audience, all he saw was those two hundred and fifty ladies who joked with him, called him everything but his own name, thanked him for volunteering to come out once a week to call their games and took the time to say goodnight, wish him a Merry Christmas or Happy Easter.

Yes two hundred and fifty old girls in a barn with glowing cigarettes and hot cups of coffee cured him of his shyness...

Hi OldAirMail... <<q

Sat through many of those classes myself.

The Instructor really makes the course because after sitting through the course every two or three years it could get quite boring after a lengthy time period.

I remember one Instructor we had was a Prison Guard, the stories that guy would tell during lunch and breaks would curl your hair...

Thanks for the comments... ;)

A big congrats to your grandson FT. I don't think I would have had the nerve to do that at 13. Twenty years later I was transferred to instructor duty while in the U.S. Navy and initially volunteered to stay on sea duty to get out of it. Six months later I was sent there anyway.

Many thanks FliyingTrucker for your comments.

Only inform that pulpos is plural a single octopus is a pulpo...
If you travel to Spain I recommend "pulpo a la gallega".

Hi Hawkeye07... <<q

You must have taken Public Speaking in High or Upper School. Here it is compulsory that each student does one or two speeches in front of the class.

This month is the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Contest.

We had to do Public Speaking in the military here in front of our own units. Sometimes the topic was chosen or delegated to you by the Sergeant in charge of the Flight. You had to speak for at least thirty to forty-five minutes and then take questions after.

It was interesting and good training... ;)
