From NBC News:

In a post to the company's official blog, Yahoo's Jay Rossiter explained that it did not appear that the attackers had breached Yahoo servers to collect information, but rather had logged in to a number of accounts using data collected from "a third party database."

due to privacy issues and hacking of the major email companies,
I switched to http://www.inbox.com a few years ago.

Yahoo says it believes the usernames and passwords weren't collected from its own systems, but from a third-party database. The company says it is resetting passwords on affected accounts and has "implemented additional measures" to block further attacks.

........................... This is where it gets odd. When Yahoo resets your password, you can't get into your own account. I have a friend going through this for the last two days. She has been trying to change her password and user name to no avail. Yahoo does not respond at all. My account was not affected. Yet.

Its difficult to imagine anything more serious than someone else exercising control and changing your e-mail name and password!..... ...!

I think you're supposed to redo the changed password, but I'm thinking Yahoo servers are overloaded with password changes right now?
