My first FSX Simulated Flight of 2014

Evening All...

Have programmed a three (3) hour cross country flight using ADF and VORs in Microsoft FSX and have just completed the first thirty (30) minutes. Will get at it tomorrow I hope...

FSX and Windows 7
Season is late Fall "Autumn" with a little snow on the ground.
Time is early morning.
Aircraft is a Douglas DC3/C47/Dak on wheel skis.
Livery is from Andy190 a Simviation Member and is available in the FSX Downloads right here on Simviation...

Another month and this body of water will be froze over and used by snowmobilers, ice boats and ice fishermen with their multi-colored ice fishing huts...

Descending to 2000ft and bringing her around for second leg...


Nice little airport in cottage country just north of Toronto, Ontario, Canada...

A polar bear would take a taxi before we were grounded...

Military Operational Commitments overrode Civil Rules and Regulations. Still do.

I was flying years before unions and many of the Civilian Rules and Regulations on IFR came into effect. Thinking about it there were no limits on how long a pilot could fly in one day either.

I do agree some of the Civilian Rules and Regulations were a long time in coming and were certainly needed.

The Douglas DC3 was a good aircraft also, landing on the ice at night with only a few flare pots for reference sure tested an aviators skills.
The problem with the 3s was everything was hand bombed up hill and they took forever to put to bed in minus 40+ Celsius and strong winds.
I would also smoke a pouch of pipe tobacco during one trip lasting perhaps fourteen to sixteen hours or more.
Many locations the fuel was wobble pumped from 45 gallon drums and in that weather.

During the summer we used the Consolidated Catalina/Canso or to us...the old pig boat...
Everything was loaded through those blisters...

I was happy to get on the Douglas 4s and 6s and those 3 and pig boat trips were just plain gravy at the end of the month...

My favourite real aircraft is still the DeHavilland of Canada DHC-3 "Otter". They have not built an aircraft yet that can replace it...

Sure wish FSX had a good radial engine Otter in all configurations...

They also need to make the DC3 and the Otter with wheel skis that have different settings like the real aircraft.

There was no intention of landing at the airport you see...just a flyover...mostly a Nav Training Flight without the use of GPS...

Never had the opportunity to fly the DC3. Nearest I came was the Anson and what we called the flying pig - Vickers Valetta.

I don't think the Vickers Valetta ever served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the 40s and 50s.

I believe the Royal Air Force replaced their Daks/C47s/DC3s with the Vickers Valetta right after World War Two.

I flew with a retired Royal Air Force Squadron Leader when he was coming over onto the 4s and he seemed to like the aircraft.

I have not been to a company reunion in several years now as most of the folks I don't know and the rest have passed on...

Now the Avro Anson, yes I put a few hours in those.

I am still kicking my butt over something I procrastinated about.

Guess it was the early 60s or late 50s we had two company Anson aircraft pushed off the apron and into the long grass.

They were serviceable at one time and each year they seemed to get pushed back further.

Well they were offered to a flying museum and they turned both aircraft down. Not sure why...perhaps cost.

I asked if it was possible for me to take them and was told get them out of there at my own expense.

Summer was near and things got busy and every time I taxied by those Anson's I kept telling myself to get them home.

Late Fall/Autumn rolled around and they burned the field off, said it was a mistake...humbug...the two aircraft went up in flames with several other wooden airframes of various types and stuff out of the company hangars no one wanted.

It still makes me mad because all the aircraft I have ever owned I paid for, first time I was offered something for free I lose it...

Oh and right now, I am wearing one of my "T shirts" with a WACO from the Canadian Museum of Flight...Surrey...British Columbia...sure you have been there a few times?...

Doug, really interesting about the annies. I had the same opportunity with a couple of old SA Twin Pins which were abandoned near Mezziadin. Since I served with 21Sqdn in the Middle East flying Twin Pins, I figured there must be a way to get hold of them. Well, I checked on the registrar and I could have picked them up for cost of transportation. Well, next time I flew up there to make some sort of claim, the engines were gone and the airframes shot up and full of holes. That's what comes of procrastination. O btw, the Canadian museum of flight is now in Langley, crammed into a small corner of the local airport. I hope some day, someone will get them moved to better premises. Here in Lillooet, there's a plain jane J3 that someone doesn't want to fly, been there since I have been here, never flown and won't sell. I cry every time I see it.

Good morning logjam...

I know what you mean about the J3.

There is one bugsmasher field we stop at which has about twenty or so aircraft parked in the open.

I know there are at least five of them that have never turned a prop in 60 days, but, they are not for sale and the owners will not sell.

It is odd that the owners still come out to socialize but not to fly...or perhaps it is just me that thinks it is odd...
