What I wanted - - - What I got

Postby OldAirmail » Wed Dec 25, 2013 6:21 pm

All I wanted were a few SIMPLE things. Not even expensive simple things.

My wife comes from a family with psychic powers. If you want one thing, they can divine the EXACT opposite.

You want a small rock? They'll get you a mountain.

It really does no good to tell them EXACTLY what you want. They just have to surprise you.

Once I asked for a Sandisk Sansa Clip Plus.

It's a CHEAP ($25-$35) MP3 player to use while I walk.

Not good enough. I got an 8 battery boom box.

So my wife can't work, and I'm out of work. "Just give me a $25-$30 Amazon gift card," I said. And I really would have been happy with just that.

But no, not good enough for her. She thinks my computer room is cold. She buys me one of these.

(It's really about 3 feet wide by 2.5 high.)

I don't want it, don't need it, and have no place to put it except in front of a chest of drawers. Now I need to pull it away from the chest of drawers, without pulling the cord out of the wall, to pull open a drawer.

I'll have to figure a way to get rid of it.

The rest of the gifts are pretty much the same - don't want, don't need, can't use.

Oh, I did get a walking stick for when it's icy out there. THAT I can use.

So, yeah, the only thing useful that I got this year for Christmas was a stick.

I did get some boiled frozen spinach with my overcooked turkey. :D

I thought about how good that was as I washed dishes

It's amazing how her family is/were able to get me something similar to what I asked for, but totally useless.

Usually I just buy what I want before Christmas.

Although I was recently laid off, I did buy myself the Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Go! Pro USB Audio System for $25 to try out with the ButtKicker that I bought last year.

So, as the only kid in this household, I did have something to play with. :D

Those Sandisk players are sweet. I have an old (5+ years) 1Gb that I still haven't filled up. It works like a '65 Mustang - a few quirks but basically sound.

I considered getting one of the new 4Gb models. At walmart.com and amazon.com it was about $30 - just under the threshold for free shipping. So I considered getting some $5-7 earbuds along with it.

In the end I just tweaked my old one and it sounds as good as ever.

I used to drive a 3 state area. After awhile I got tired of listening to my music and the radio.

I bought one of the 4 GB Clip Plus when I found that you could use them with audiobooks downloaded from the library for free.

I would keep 4 to 6 books on it at all times. As you said, I never came close to filling it up. As far as I'm concerned, the audiobooks are better than TV - NO COMMERCIALS! :D

Ever since I've been needing a little help walking once in a while, I got "Leki Wanderfreund Antishock Walking Staff",

Image

Expandable at the knurls out to about 5'10", essentially allows me to adjust it for a perfect fit whether I am in tenni's or thick-soled boots, or out to a "walking stick" length rather than "cane" length for the offroad type efforts. The rubber tip is removeable and it has a titanium steel tip for snow, ice, sluch etc. Digs in real nice.

Having said all of that stuff, what I love about it the most is that it has a spring inside, a heavy one, that acts as a shock absorber when using it to prevent shocks from ground contact from going up my arm. They be very fatigueing very fast! Greatest idea in hiking staves/canes since the horizontal handle. They are a triffle expensive at about $65.00, but worth every cent IMO!

So, now that I've babbled for so long, the point i am trying to get to is that a stick for Christmas may not necessarily be such a horrible gift after all

And tell your wife that computers work a LOT better cold! That's why all the fans all through them! "BRRRRRRRRRR!!!" to us is "AHHHHHHHHH!!" to a computer!

Anyway, have a great Christmass evening all!

Pat~
Have fun, fly high, far, and free!

Mine is virtually identical to the one in your picture, spring and all.

About 15 years ago, we got a small dog. Nothing worked in housebreaking her, until I started to take her for walks.

Although I work "hard" and can be on my feet all day from time to time, I didn't do a lot of fast continuous walking.

I found myself huffing & puffing trying to keep up with a half grown puppy!

So now I do a lot of walking, day and night, in all kinds of weather. Ice included. And that's where I need the "stick".

With all the snow covered ice we get, I slip at least one or twice every winter.

If I had to exercise, there would be many a day that I just wouldn't do it. There'd be too many excuses.

That old dog has probably added years to my life.

About nine years ago in September I had all my teeth yanked out due to a massive abscess, what did my wife get me for Christmas that year. Yep an ELECTRIC TOOTHBRUSH, it's somewhere in the back of a drawer still boxed unopened. :?
