Moderators,

Postby H » Fri Nov 22, 2013 3:27 am

some evidently don't think you should ever sleep and want all of you catering to this site 24/7. There are a number of spam (to be polite) posts and another that needs moving (the latter's a new member wanting an FSX acft, so that's somewhat excusable).
No matter what site one goes on these days, someone is trying to spam some sort of trash. No favorite, and not really nutritionally good, but I'd much rather be force-fed the processed meat product from the can...

Or maybe just appoint a couple of moderators in different time zones?

Took me about 30 seconds to clean one I saw this.

We do have mods in differebnt time zones but mods have been lazy recently --- may need to reappoint some mods who take more interest.

As said -- this was the worst attack for some time but easy to clean >>>>>. click user - delete user/all posts - done <<v

Obviously, everyone can see where it comes from! (Its russian)
I have some fun by seeing new members by name, and then betting with myself, new spammer or not

And it seems to me they only "shoots", when there's no red or green members online!!!

I came online at about 07:00 CET this morning, there was about five or so posts, then I read the news, came back and the first page was full. Nice to see that everyone just ignored them and did not post in any though.....

BIG TIME YES!!!

That would have been a big PIA as I would have to remove each post one by one in any thread responded to.

What I'd seen on other attacks was gibberish. So I'm not really sure if we (SimViation) were THE target, or if we were just practice for another site(s) sometime in the future..

I'm guessing that these attacks didn't com from a single IP address, but from computers connected to the internet full time, that have been taken over by virus-bots.

Our sign up process requires not only email verification but also the specific aviation related answer to a question .... to help eliminate non aviation types (who will be the spammers). Only after the user verifies his email and answers the question can his account be activated.

Bot's that clever these days? Doubt it ...... But it is still a mystery and hard not to get a little paranoid when coupled with other things that have happened here in the main site regularly ......

I had thought of that. But it seems that a human could start the account and leave the rest to a program. Once done they can open another account. On and On.

I don't know about our site, but some of the other sites that I've registered with have mentioned that they watch for multiple accounts from the same computer/IP address.

For the most part I thought that it was a way to prevent sock puppet accounts and/or prevent banned persons from returning.

If we can catch them, I vote for tearing them limb from limb by attaching 4 ultralights to each arm & leg. And I don't care how long it takes. :D

Spammers/hackers/attackers always use spoof IP's. Makes it the hardest way for website (& server hosting) admin to deal with - because the IP's are just fictional numbers .. (unbannable/untraceable because each post is a different IP)

When did you start that Pete, was that a part of the new server features? What would an example question look like??
