They've only got 120 volts 60 Hz over there, Waspi.... ....

......they need our 240 volts 50 HZ for a much better effect!.... ...!

Actually, we use 120 2 phase or 3 phase in each house, manufactured/mobiles run on 120 2 phase almost entirely. bigger the house, more phases used, ie: small apartments etc, 120 single phase, bigger house, doublewides etc, 2 phase, and full size larger homes, 3 phase. Now, 120vac 2 phase= 240 vac to ground. Most of the home size appliances, such as built in heaters, A/C units, dryers etc take 2 phase, a lot of household heaters taking 3 phase or 2 with a third breaker for the blower. Look for the # of wires (insulated) going to the house from the nearby pole mounted transformer for the phase count. and remember, that's always just the number of phases, there is always phase to ground OR phase to phase readings, depending. 3phase is a bit different, due to the phase relationship of all 3 phases. They are only 120 degrees apart, so the best you can get 1.414 X 230volts= ~320 vac to ground.
In my longwinded, overly verbose way, I am saying....Ohhhh, we have 240 60 Hz too! :!: :ugeek:
Have fun, fly high, far, and free!

More simply, a neutral line has had 120 volts each side of it (120 + 120 across the outer two = 240) since the last century.

All explained here (including plugs and sockets). Domestic Supplies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mains_elec ... by_country.

In the UK:
Single phase, 230/240V 50 Hz Domestic supply. Two wire, Live + Neutral.
Three Phase, 415/440V 50 HZ Industrial supply. Three-wire.

Apart from the power distribution via very high voltage Electricity Pylons overland, most of the power delivery (cables) is buried underground....very tidy!

Paul....Electrical Engineer...long, long ago!.... :D ..!

....its all capable of giving you a very nasty shock!... :o ...!
