Saitek FLY 5 throttles can't increase incrementally.

Postby Eagle eye » Mon Oct 14, 2013 10:17 pm

I am a newbie to flight sims and FSX gold. I have powerful desktop computer and NVIDIA GTX560Ti video card. I thought I would try the MS FSX gold simulator with an Saitek Fly 5 joystick. I am so disappointed overall because of the following.(a) The "scenery.confg error message which I have to click through each time I start FSX. (b) The joystick has been calibrated etc but I can't gradually increase the engine power its a fast idle or takeoff that's it. Hopeless for landing approach or taxi. (c) My longitudinal trim after takeoff with aircraft all cleaned up requires massive amounts of nose down trim. Picture quality is great at 1920x1080 on my 1920x1080 native monitor. Any help you can give me would be much appreciated. I am quite computer literate but this is a problem too far.

Did u check to be sure the joystick was "caliibrated"? It must be recaled after every reboot!

As for the Scenery Config error, read the error message, go to Settings, Scenery Library, delete teh addon scenery named in the error message and re-add it, then restart FS. The .bgl file it's seeking has been moved/deleted/corrupted without "telling" the sim.

The trim problem is a weight and balance problem, IE: your CG is too far forward. if you aren't changing the Fuel/Payload option for that flight, then the weight and balance section of the plane's Aircraft.CFG file may be off. Check for an update to the aircraft you may have installed lately, or need to install. Other wise, you may need to diddle the numbers to make it right. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc526949.aspx#mozTocId136011 has a complete explanation of what each number and setting is in all of the Aircraft.cfg file. If u aren't familiar with editing the file, this is a wondreful resource to use. :handgestures-thumbsup: Remember to back-up before you change ANYthing!! :!:

Which aircraft are you using in your new flight simulator?

Are you starting off in the Cessna 172 Trainer, to get used to all the controls, and the flight characteristics of an aircraft?

Make sure the Autopilot is switched off, trim the Cessna for take-off, then apply power slowly, and as the aircraft reaches its flying speed, ease back slightly on the joystick and it will take off!

I use the Saitek Cyborg Fly 5 joystick*, and applying the above procedure I have no problems with any of the joystick controls (including the throttle), on any aircraft!

Paul.....Its good to learn with the Trainer!... ...!

* I have tightly compressed 4 coils of the joystick spring with a couple of tie-wraps, to ease the pressure on the overly powerful spring!

OOPS!! Thanx Paul! I never even thought about the autopilot, since I never use it! That's what *I* get for trying to be helpful

By the by, Very nice to meet you all, my name is Pat, and I've been reading the forums for a while now, and finally got an email addy to work so I coukld register :D
I was a Marine F-4N/J and S Phantom II radar tech, among other things for about 10 years a while back, and learned to fly before I learned to drive. I LOVE flying, but and medically unable to any more so I sim. And lurk on forums, obviously
So anyway, Have fun all and nice to meet y'all once again!

Thanks for your very helpful replies Fozzer & Phantom Tweek. I have solved my main problem by recalibrating my Saitek Fly 5 stick. I must confess I must have failed to press a controller button between stick movements. Now I have full control of throttles. As for the scenery config message, I am still working on it. I have constructed my own computer over the years and have always based my spec on video editing and in later years HD video & Blu-ray disc creation. So you can see I am a real newbie on the block when it comes to gaming. The aircraft trim issue has also gone away, thanks. Phantom Tweek I have been flying the Cessna 172 a lot but I recently bought the 'Just Flight' Constellation & the Alabeo Beech Staggerwing. The Beech is such a sweet aircraft, I know of only one real one in New Zealand. The Connie is also a honey and has so much to it. I have always felt it is one of the most photographic aircraft around. Thanks once again.

Ummmm.....Not not to be overly picky, but most of us prefer you to spell it TweAk vs the EE version.....a tweek is a user of methamphetimines, a TweAk is an electronics tech....we tweak the settings to make it work better, etc...
And just so you know, a teaker is a small, jeweler's screwdriver we use to actually DO the tweaking. Most of us have our own we use, or we used to before the advent of the Navy's Tool Control Program. They put a stop to THAT real fast! :naughty:

Just a small note on the finer points of the American (NOT English!) language :D

Now all us....F.O.M.D.T (Fraternal Order of Microwave Device Technicians) tweaks will have to think up a new one! :(
