I see both sides of the story:

The company perspective, she left her cash register, presumably not secured and probably containing more than $600. She made chase, the thief could have easily have turned around and wildly fired at her, missing her and killing a customer or two. Her action would have caused said deaths and as such, as am employee Lowes would have been libel and it would have cost them millions as it was against company policy to act in the manner she did.

Her point of view. 18 years for working for a company instils a certain amount of company loyalty and wanted to protect it, and like most of us she is probably sick and tired of working hard whilst a section of our society gets everything for free.

Personally I think Lowes missed a huge advertising opportunity here. "Why are Lowes prices so low?, Let us introduce Karen Sizemore, who ensures that as a customer, you don't carry the overheads caused by shoplifters keeping Lowes prices low" (or such like)

The ultimate theft deterrent for me, at Sainsbury's, is the fear that the theft alarm device at the exit door may trigger off a Gatling Gun automatically aimed at me, upon departure.

Its not worth stealing that tempting bag of Toffees!... :o ...!

Paul.... ...!

Interesting to read the various comments, eg;...."Liability"!

You have to dumb down your brain and think in corporate mode. The risk to the company for an untimely injury or death lawsuit (of the employee) was a much bigger danger to the corporation than whatever a shoplifter could pilfer. That said, she should sue Lowe's if they didn't communicate what employees should do during a robbery.

This reminds me of when I was in the "casual" squadron in the Air Force, waiting for the FBI and Air Force spooks to finish my security clearance, and I had to do guard duty detail one night at the "motivation" squadron, the punishment unit for troublemakers who were on the verge of washing out. My friends and I were nervous about the detail, of course. Would we have to be like prison guards? Would the guys in motivation give us trouble? The Training Instructor in charge told us to relax. "Don't talk to them. If they run, yell "'HALT" once. Don't chase them. Don't try to stop them. If they make it over the first fence, the dogs will get them." So, we knew what to do, not to play the hero, not to put ourselves at risk because we were valuable to the Air Force as trained men, unlike the motivation crew. That employee should have done the same thing: yelled "Stop, Thief!" once, for her sake and for the sake of her employer.

People who have a lot (the corporate big wigs) are better able to look at it with dispassion, "let them steal the screwdriver, drill, whatever".

People who have little enough, have a stronger antipathy towards the thief. STOP THE MFKR!!!

One of my part time jobs after the Air Force was in a 7-11 convenience store working the midnight shift. Twice a week between 1am and 2am two welfare families (two very large obese women with 3 or 4 children each (born 2 and a half years apart)) would come into the store where I worked alone.

They would spread out, left and right. After about 4 or 5 minutes, ONE woman would buy something that cost 50 cents (as I said, it was a long time ago).

There was nothing that I could do, even when I would see one or two of the children putting stuff in their pockets. They ignored the security cameras. Untouchables.

BTW - The reference to children born 2 years apart was due to the welfare laws of the time. A woman had to get off welfare when the entitlement child became 2 years old. If she was pregnant at the 2 year mark, she could stay on welfare.

Hay! Guess what? Moms pregnant again!

Even thoe she violated company policy, after 18 years, maybe, a reprimand, but to be outright fired!
Just goes to show you that there not as loyal to there workers, as the workers are, and than we wonder why people are getting tired of being screwed by big business!

So... instead of responding to the theft, this woman should have done nothing? If you accept your losses as a shop because of theft, it's an open invitation to anyone who wants to steal something. Come shoplift at our place, we won't take any action. You might sue us... WTF?

This woman should be given a medal and a new job. At another place because her former employer isn't worth to work for.

It's not that big companies are necessarily bad. But the more that you are worth, the more likely it is that someone will sue you.

Remember the woman many years ago who ordered hot coffee at a McDonalds? She put the cup between her legs and tried to stire in the cream & sugar WHILE DRIVING.
That she won her lawsuit is very damning of our civilization and society.

Type thief sues into Google and you'll see people suing others for the most outrageous reasons.

Here's some good ones;
"A convicted thief is suing Scotland Yard for discrimination after she was turned down for a job as a police constable because of her criminal record."

Kidnapper Sues Former Hostages, Says They Broke Promise (not to call the police)

Homeowner Sued By Alleged Burglar Who Shot Him In Face

Suing is the new lottery. And if you're convicted and in a prison, you don't even have to pay for a lawyer!

Then too, suing can be used as an intimidation tactic. Even if you win, YOU have to pay for a lawyer.

Yes, Lowe's will have more theft because of this notoriety. They definitely could have handled it much better.

The bigger that the companies are, the more that the lawyers will dictate the rules.

And the more inflexible the rules, the less sense they make to normal people.

Don't argue, Jetranger.

Just drink the Kool-Aid like everyone else. Otherwise....

As I said before: If you want to take over a country, infiltrate its' education and entertainment industries.

Teach the people that the role of government is to take care of you.

And if anyone tries to contradict that dogma, label them as extremists and whackos. Derision and ridicule is the best way to shut them up. There's no reason to tolerate those people!

Yes, she should have just let this turd go and later give a discription to the police. But her heart was in the right place, she cares.
She made a mistake. She made a snap decision. Though it was the wrong decision, it sure does not rate being fired from her job, especially
after 18 years of service. This whole thing don't make any sense.

I've never heard of being fired for caring about the company you work for, caring enough to put your self in harms way for them. the most
she should have gotten was a mild to moderate talking to. Its almost like they had it out for her for something else. This whole thing stinks
man!
