I've always liked this aircraft for the amphibious anywhere. Has played very big major roles throught out history. To see Sylvester Stallone, with Jason Stratman in Expandables who wouldn't like this aircraft.
Nice job with the photo's very nice Bass.

Hi Bass... :D

Your PBY is actually a PBY-5A...the "A" being for Amphibian.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_PBY_Catalina

Here we called them a "Canso" and many of us referred to them as "Pig Boats".

The Catalina/Canso with the rear blisters were a little faster than the aircraft with just solid Dutch Doors but either way, with rear Blisters or Dutch Doors all the freight and passengers were loaded from those positions.

We used to unload 45 gallon drums of fuel and oil through those rear doors into a flat bottom boat alongside the aircraft while keeping the aircraft into the wind in two or three foot waves. Lots of fun.
Where the Flight Engineer sat (in the pylon with one little windows either side) we installed a bladder to carry fuel oil, stove oil and gas. We never carried a Flight Engineer much but we had a Load Master who performed the same job as they did on the Douglas DC3s/C47s/Daks.
As a crew of three (3) we all worked together.

Everything went North by air, all year round. The Barge usually made it around to the settlements once a year (but not always) before freeze up.

Open Water we used the PBY-5A.
Winter we used the DC3/C47/Dak on wheel/skis to land on the ice.
The DE Havilland of Canada DHC-3 radial engine "Otter" on wheels/wheel/skis/floats and amphibious floats was and still is used today.

I enjoyed those long trips as Captain I got to practice my cooking on the crew...
Eighteen Hour Flying Days were not uncommon back then....

Wonderful set Bass... <<q
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Thanks ;)

@Doug. Now that is some very interesting informations you gave us all there. Thank you very much!

The only thing i miss, and i'm sure Fozzer too, is what you served the crew when practice cooking :D

Btw, i'm still having a look out for the DHC radial otter.....

You are welcome Bass... ;)

Here is the Link to the De Havilland Otter Package I would like but not sure it will work with Microsoft FSX.

http://store01.prostores.com/servlet/x- ... ail?no=367

For you and Paul, Bass....we had two hot water makers for tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
...there were two ovens much like a microwave and they would hold a fair size chicken for cooking
...there was a hot plate for heating potatoes and veggies
...no refrigerator and there was no refrigerator on the Douglas DC3s/C47/Daks....what needed to be kept cold was put
in an ice cooler or next to the emergency door just behind the pilots seat...port side
The Captain had a cash advance to purchase what food was needed for the crew and to pay cash for the accommodation's if a stay was
required somewhere rather than a Staff House.

Keep in mind during the winter we landed many times on the ice between snowmobile lights or flare pots and poor weather often diverted us to
the nearest Staff House or suitable landing Base.

Some good pictures of various Flare Pots:

https://www.google.ca/search?q=flare+po ... =646&dpr=1

I would often do a small roast or chicken with veggies and all the trimmings. What was left over in food was divided equally by the crew.

The Old Girl or other spouses of the crew would supply the homemade pie or cake. Believe me, we ate well....
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Thanks again Doug for your informations
I sure would like to be part of your life experiences back then!

Been looking at the DHC link you posted, and i too am sure it'll not work in FSX!
I'm going to try the FS9 version once again in FSX and see what the problems were. I cant remember!
(If its gauges, it can be fixed with some work)
Just visited Suclaro, but it seems they have gone in a difficult way to let simmers download without paying for it!! Financial crisis works everywhere

After all our searching, soon there might be someone out there that'll make a radial "otter" for us

Good morning Bass... :)

About eighteen months ago I contacted several companies by e-mail about doing a DHC-3 "Otter" in all it's configurations and told that the DHC-3 was on a long list and it would take some time.

Not sure when Aerosoft did their DHC-2 "Beaver" why they did not follow through with the DHC-3 "Otter".

XPlane has put out an excellent package on the DHC-3 "Otter" and sure hope some of these other folks follow their lead.

I found most of the gauges and switches in the FS2004 Download of the DHC-3 "Otter" do not show or work in FSX. I had no problem when I used FS2004 with the Otter Download and things all worked fine.
I removed FS2004 from the system and only use FSX now but I am seriously looking at several other systems like "XPlane".

Good luck on your search and have a great day.... <<q
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
