FSX Freezing during flight

Postby RAMPRAT » Wed Sep 11, 2013 11:00 pm

Have a new problem with FSX GOLD it will stop responding during flight but shows no error msg. just freezes up. Temps are CPU-CORE 1=44C, 2= 46C, 3=41C AND 4=44C. PACKAGE IS 47C. MB is 37c. Graphics card is 31c and HDD is 26c. All temps are max values. Only way to start game again is to shut down system and reboot. Any ideas? Using CPUID to track my temps.

Not even the task manager can close it? That's odd. No bluescreen? Usually with heat, eithe you'll get the BSOD, or the whole system suddenly shuts off. Either can indicate an overheat.

Are you sure that's where you want to start, though? Have you tried running some CPU intense benchmark tool to heat your CPU some, as to duplicate the problem some other way? This will help you differentiate between a system issue, or an FSX issue. Try prime 95 or hyper-pi. Something to give your CPU a workload, and see if it happens like that also.

IMPORTANT NOTE: before you do, ensure that overheat protection in BIOS or wherever is on, so if it does get hot, it will shut down. Also, check your fans and heat sink for normal operation and cleanliness. Give your system no other reason to fail. If you think it's a heat problem, there are plenty of ways to check. Monitor your temps.
If you have no problems doing this, maybe your FSX install is corrupted somehow.

A few specifics would help, also. Although, if properly run, none of these tests should cause any harm.

Have you recently changed something? Has it done this before?

Don't you even get something in your program log files?

To me it looks like a physical memory dump, if so, you'll get a "program not responding".

Yes. It did it one other time. The day before. Was flying 747 at fl330 .84 mach. No blue screen and the cursor doesn't work. I just freezes mid flight. The sound still plays but the video stops. Does this help? As for all of the other things that were mentioned to try, I wouldn't have a clue what to do. I just play the game that's all. One thing though, it was working fine until Adobe did an update to its program. Could this have a negative impact on FSX. Would it say something in my event log and what would I look for? Sorry I cant be of much help on this but I don't know beans about computers.

If you're running Windows 7 or 8 try using system restore.

Be advised if you use system restore you will loose any thing you added between the restore point and the day you do the restore. If it is only 1 day you should have no problems but be weary when there is a week between the two points as you can lose things like automatic updates to you OS and other programs that use auto update as well ADOBE being one that come into mind. Of course your system will re download any update that had occurred, so That really is not a problem I was just letting you know so you do not get surprised when it tells you there are updates available.
Of course not all programs have auto updates so if you added any thing to FSX between the two dates they will be lost. But most of us keep back ups just for such occasions.
You might want to consider backing up things before you do a system restore.
And one other thing is System restore is not limited to just Windows 7 and windows 8 as Windows XP and Windows Vista have the abilty to to the same thing. I can not remember if Windows ME had System restore or not but that is a very old OS and I not sure FSX would run with it.

In my FS 2004 and FSX I occasionally find that funny things happen, like freezes, resets, crashes, etc, for no apparent reason.

Providing that it doesn't happen too often, I shrug my shoulders, reset the computer, fire up the Sim again, and carry on as before, whistling a happy tune... ...!

I put it all down to Fate.........and his Mate.......and the way Computers normally work.... ;) ...!

Just happened again. Same thing. Have sound but video froze. Same aircraft also, 747. All temps within normal range. Must be fate. Also, just found out that I have several updates to my Intel chipset. What are these and should I install them? Thanks

This is a fairly well-known problem in FSX, and it got increasingly frustrating to the point I jumped to Prepar3D.

While I miss DX10, I don't miss having my flight freeze 4 minutes from landing, or in the case of the last straw breaking the camel's back, freezing up when I was setting on the tarmac configuring my pre-flight settings.

I have yet to hear a "conclusive" reason from any of forums. Mine was dying in the d3d11.dll module. Others die in fsx.exe, others in yet other places.

I may be barking up the wrong tree here, but it's worth a try if it goes even part-way to helping out...

I used to get some pretty annoying freezes in FSX and it was getting to the point where I was considering snapping the discs and throwing them in the bin to make a point, but putting a previous OS' version of the uiautomationcore.dll file in the FSX root directory made many problems go away very quickly.

There are a few versions of the file kicking about but as far as I can tell if you've not got one of these 'old' ones, it's a really good bet it will allow you get some small degree of reliability back on Win7 based systems.

Go ahead and use System Restore. I've had that workout VERY well a few times, when NOTHING else worked. Of course, it doesn't always help. But IT IS worth a try.

If you have ANY worries at all, make a restore point before you restore your computer to a previous restore point, and you should have no problems. That will let you restore your system back to where you are now.

As to loosing all kinds of important stuff, I've never had any problems.

You may loose settings and updates that occurred between now (whenever now may be) and the date of the restore point that you choose, but you will not loose anything in the way of documents, email, etc.

Any updates, important or not, will be installed again by your system.

Unless you're a complete neophyte, which I know you are not, you'll be able to remember any significant program download/installs done recently, and reinstall them again.

Anyone new to System Restore just type it in at the Help and Support prompt.

If System Restore is new to anyone don't forget the "Show more restore points" check box in the lower left corner.

You need to check your Event viewer It will tell you what the problem was. You can find this in the control panel
