Mystery Ship

At the LAA Rally this weekend I finally got to see the amazing Travelair Mystery Ship replica built for enthusiast/collector Richard Seeley by vintage aircraft restorer Ron Souch.
I couldn't get any closer as it was parked behind a barrier.




Typically the sun disappeared behind a big cloud just at the very moment it taxied out to take off.
I desperately wanted some shots of it in the air & this is the best I could do.

Those photos are fine... after all, the profile is everything with that airplane.
It's a very nice design from that era- I have seen very nice aerobatics flown with a US-registered replica. I think even in a crosswind landing, it wouldn't be too bad (especially on grass).

Sorry, been digesting a ton of Mystery Ship info I have received lately!

Just saw pictures of this same bird at the same event on the Reno air racing page.

Paul, for a racer she was a sweet heart...but do NOT fly it uncowled!! The Younkins found out real quick why the original Mystery Ship almost crashed without its cowl....the flow around the uncowled engine greatly disturbs this sensitive girl

HAGAR señor Doug, I apologize for this very "out of time" comment, but the Mistery Ship blows away any sanity I have left. "Pancho" Barnes personality allways vibrated my rebelious sensitivity, since I started flying sport & scale control line models, with .35 two stroke engines in 1959, with "simple" fixed landing gears, sometimes with a third line for engine control. Found this videos today, when Google Destiny intruded this forum, so I share ( first video can only be seen at youtube site, sorry ):

The "Happy Bottom Riding Club" is another cause for me identifying with "Pancho", since from 1956 to 1962, we had a retired race horse (called "Whisky" by my mother, wich explains my "education") at the "HÍPICA ANDALUZA" riding club in México city. I used to ride "Whisky" on week ends into the country (now urban areas, saturated with automobiles in a gigantic parking lot that crawls slower than snails, if any had survived ) along with my teen age friends (whom did not survive, either ).

It may have a trailing link assembly in the wheel pant like the GeeBees.
