Where to install FSX

Postby septimus » Tue Jul 30, 2013 7:15 am

I have been reading through this forum and others about where to install FSX.

There are mixed opinions, some favour on a separate drive others in a separate partition and some say keep
it on the boot drive in the default directory.

I currently have it installed on my boot drive a 500GB Samsung 840 SSD. This has average write speeds but a
very good read speed which FSX does a lot of.

My question to you is, before I install to many more aircraft and scenery files, should I keep it on the SSD or just
have Windows 7 on the SSD and put FSX on a separate HDD. I would prefer to keep it all on the SSD as only
having the OS on such a large SSD is a waste of space and money but I am open to suggestions.

My system is an I7 3770K ( 4.2Ghz ) on an Asus Maximus V Formula Motherboard, 64Gb Corsair Platinum Memory and an
Asus GTX680 Graphics Card.

Another quick question, my frame rate is set at 40fps and is very smooth but looking at the trees they seem to "shimmer"
any one any ideas as to how, if possible, to get rid of this as I find it very distracting.

Thank you in advance for your help

I can understand you want to keep fsx on that fast ssd.

I would make a folder called "Flightsim (or what ever you want)" and then a folder called "fsx (or what e....)".
Install fsx to the last folder.

In that way you are away from the os, but you still got the speed.

The tree shimmerings most of us got, when viewing around, so i dont know.

The shimmering is more than likely caused by a setting on your video card. Now which setting that might be you guess is as good as mine it could have something to do with mip mapping but I am not sure or is more than likely the way the textures are being displayed.
This will probably not make a difference but try setting your Frame rates to 30 and see what happens.

Thank you all for your comments.

After posing this question I was forced by the girlfriend to take her to are local
shopping centre as she needed to get something. While I waited I popped in to
my favourite shop. one that sells computers!!!, and sitting on the shelf just
asking to be bought was a very cheap 120GB SSD. Well it's not on the shelf
any more, it will be installed in to my rig tomorrow.

This new SSD will be for the OS and the larger Samsung SSD can then just
have FSX on. With regard to the shimmering like you I am at a loss at the
moment as to how to reduce or eliminate it. I have seen videos on YouTube
and some people do not have that problem. I think what I will do is contact
them and ask them for the setting that controlled that problem.

Once again thanks for your input.

When you install FSX on your new setup I suggest using the shortest path possible. My FSX root directory is E:\FSX
