Scenery.cfg file error

FSX including FSX Steam version.

I have two PCs. One has Win7 Ultimate 64 Bit (let'e call it PC1) and the other WinXP 32 Bit (PC2). FSX is installed in both. The problem with the scenery file is in PC1. I was able to get to the scenery.cfg file using the following path:
C:\programdata\microsoft\FSX\scenery. However in PC2, I was unable to find "Programdata" in the C: drive, unless it has a completely different path. I thought that if I can get to the scenery.cfg in PC2 in which I am not experiencing the same problem, I can compare what's in its Area.115 file. Does that make any sense?

Forget the Scenery.cfg file.It has nothing to do with this. FSX is looking for the path to Area.115 which is the FSX\Addon Scenery\scenery folder. If something is wrong with the folder names it cannot find it, hence the error message.

I told you the location to Scenery.cfg earlier in this thread. In WinXP it's C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX

Please be patient with me. If this causes you guys frustration, I can just close it. I can just click OK everytime it comes up and it will disappear. However assuming that you are still willing to help:

After you ably described it in your past thread I had no problem finding the path to the scenery.cfg in PC1. However, following the path you listed for the PC2 with WinXP, when I got to FSX, it listed three files, Facilities, SceneryCache and SceneryIndexes. I did not find the "scenery.cfg". In Facilities, it listed various Index.IDX files. In SceneryCache, it was blank. In SceneryIndexes, it listed a whole lot of Filelist followed by numbers.

One more thing, when I go to the FSX Scenery Library and click on Add On Scenery, under it were the following: AVG PC Tuneup, Bin, Launcher, Microsoft Games and Resources.

I'm just telling you this just in case they are relevant.

Sorry Bubblehead. You're being given conflicting information which must be confusing. I must admit to being confused myself. I'm not sure where we go from here. Perhaps dave3cu can step in & help. Dave?

If I can only get to the scenery.cfg in the PC2 with WinXP, I could compare the Area.115 files from each. If there is a difference I'll copy the one from PC2 which does not have the problem to PC1 which has the problem. Nonetheless, I appreciate all you guys efforts. I'll leave this open, perhaps someone can come up with a solution.

The path that Hargar gave for the scenery.cfg file in XP is correct-C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX\. But I'd suggest you forget about the 'good' scenery.cfg file and just try to solve the error.

This link takes you to a page that explains how to get rid of the error-http://megasceneryearth.com/support/MegaSceneryEarth-How-To-Fix-FSC-Scenery-CFG-Error.htm. As the error message you quoted did not contain the scenery path, just the scenery Area.xxx, Scenerio 2 should be your solution. If that's the case, in the Scenery Library, before you delete the Scenery area, select the Area line and click Edit to see if there is any information that might help to identify the scenery involved. Note: Deleting an area from the Scenery Library does not delete any files, it only removes that scenery area from the scenery.cfg.

After you have deleted the area from the Scenery Library, restart FSX and see if you get any errors. Also check the Scenery Library the make sure the Addon Scenery is still there.

Dave

*After you get this solved, we can then work on you earlier topic viewtopic.php?f=21&t=166823 . I think your efforts there are what caused the error. Possibly deleting scenery files without first deleting their Area entry from the Scenery Library.

The path to get to the WinXP scenery.cfg file listed by Hagar was correct with the exception that the All User should've been my name (Don). When I got to the scenery.cfg file of PC2, here's what I found:

[Area.115]
Title=Reno
Local=Scenery\Cities\Reno
Layer=115
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE

[Area.116]
Title=Istanbul
Local=Scenery\Cities\Istanbul
Layer=116
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE

In my PC1 however where I'm experiencing the problem here's what was listed:

[Area.115]
Title=Addon Scenery
Local=Addon Scenery
Layer=115
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE

[Area.116]
Title=Reno
Local=Scenery\Cities\Reno
Layer=116
Active=TRUE
Required=FALSE

So I went to the FSX Scenery Library and disabled Addon Scenery. That took care of the scenery.cfg file error warning. Which brings up a question just for my information.
When you add on a scenery, how does it get assign to an [Area.xxx]? that is since the Addon Scenery under Local= in Area.115 seemed to be the one causing the problem, can I add on a scenery and assign it to Area.115 instead?

If you plan on adding scenery you can not I REPEAT CAN NOT just put it anywhere in the scenery cfg file As they are numbered and you CAN NOT have DUPLICATE NUMBERS.
Any time you add scenery manually you must put it at the bottom of the file using the next logical number.
It is easier if you use the menu in FSX to add scenery this way all you have to do is to point to the path of the scenery you want to add.
If this is confusing to you than you need to read up on how to add scenery in FSX as you do not have to put new scenery in the addon scenery area.
In reality you can put scenery anywhere you want but that is another story and I do not want to confuse you any more.
Most people like making unique folders when adding scenery it makes it easier than just putting it in the addon scenery folder
A example is if you wanted to add scenery for say Wyoming then create a folder either in the addon scenery area or the regular scenery called Wyoming and then create two folders inside the Wyoming folder one called scenery the other called texture put your BGL files inside the scenery folder and the other files if any inside the texture folder.

Bubblehead.
You might want to download Scenery Configurator 1.1.1 from one of the sites. It's a freebie. Run it and it will show you exactly what sceneries are causing a problem. My experience tells me you have two entries for the one scenery file. You can make whatever corrections right in the utility. It's easy to use and no I am not associated with it but I sure use it a lot! Hope this helps!
