I think I have a ghost in the machine!

Postby BLAZE » Thu Jul 18, 2013 2:18 pm

Hey guys,

I have two things that have been going on that have me scratching my head.

One is, I can't use my knee board anymore. I can open it and use the buttons on the right side, but as soon as I try to scrull the
Check/Ref window, it crashes the flight sim. I can't even think of clicking anywhere near that window or the whole thing will shut down.

And B, I've been losing all Notepad items in random aircraft folders. I mean every notpad item just up and vanishes. Aircraft.Cfg
Panel.Cfg, Model.Cfg ... All of them! The first on I can live with, but that second one is no good at all.

The first time it happend it was all of the Aeroplane Heaven aircraft and another one I can't think of right now. I had to re-download the
aircraft packages to get those files back. now (today as a matter of fact) I had two more aircraft get robbed of there notpad items.
(Alphasim's C-5 Galaxy & Team FS-KBT's Mitsubishi F-2A) Like I said Random!

Have any of you guys ever even heard of such a thing, much less have it happen to you? Please Help Me! :shifty:

Hi Blaze, did you download in the last fiew days any aircraft with specifications of another flight sim that is not FSX??(assume that you have FSX)............could be the reason......
I recommend to have backups that you can use to reset your originally settings.

Hello Dwayne!.... :D ...

Has the actual file(s) disappeared completely, or has just the "Icon" for the notepad changed into something else?

Hi Trooper,
I'm running FS9. The only thing I've done that's kinda like what your talking about is download aircraft that run in both "FSX/FS2004" <-- or
vise-versa. The messed up part is, the "notepad gremlins" aren't only in my F-Sim computer upstairs, those two aircraft folders the got robbed
today were in this computer. But in this computer the knee board runs fine. I guess that means the two problems are unrelated.

Hi Paul,
That's funny that you mention "gremlins". That's what I was thinking of when I wrote this post. I looked again to make sure and they are gone
as gone does. I even tryed that thing in windows that makes it so you can see all files and folders but no joy.

Hi Dwayne, did you run any clean programs before this happened?
Are you able to make a rollback?

Hey Bass,
You just made me think of something, I think it was either the day I installed those two aircraft into FS9 (C-5 Galaxy & Mitsubishi F-2A) or the day
after that I had something weird happen to this computer. I went to start this computer up and it said "windows failed to start properly". Then it gave
me a couple choices and I (Like a dummy!) chose to have windows repair itself. We all know how that turned out! Come on.. lets say
it together.. "Windows cannot repair itself at this time" :angry-banghead:

So anyway.. short story long, I ended up restoring back about 10 days. It was after that I noticed this gremlin like activity. I'm not saying that's
what happend but.... I don't know(?)

But that don't explain the weird knee board / FS9 ejection system. (?) This is alot like the U.S. Gov. 'Alot more questions then answers'

Note: I just want to say about my above statement, that the two aircraft being installed and the computer problems WERE NOT RELATED!

Dwayne, if you did any windows repair, then you can expect a lot of files has disapeared!
I've seen this before ;)

As others are saying here, make a backup of any crusial things, and best make a security copy on another drive.

Sorry about the delayed response guys. :shifty: I've been thinking about this off and on for days. On my main F-Sim computer upstairs I
haven't run any cleanup programs or even restored windows for that matter. I don't get it.

I never made a copy of the FX folder Trooper. I will now though.

Here's another puzzler, when ever I restart windows upstairs, FS9 will fail on startup unless I manually delete this file (( FS9.EXE-3351C181.pf ))
from C:\Windows\Prefetch. Note: That .pf file is always alittle different each time FS9 loads.

Crazy Man! :confusion-shrug:

Hi,

It all suggests that you may be having permission issues. Are you running Vista or OS7/8 and have your FS programs located inside a Program Files folder? If so, then Windows doesn't like certain files in there (like cfg files) and you will have access issues (thus the PreFetch file, perhaps?).

Do things run better when you turn off UAC (temporarily)?

Hope this helps,

Hi tgibson,
Thanks for the advise. Upstairs I'm running FS9 on an older dell with O.S. Windows XP. I don't know if there is any issues like that
in Win-XP is there?
