Considering upgrading my graphics card

Hi all,

I have a computer that I am considering upgrading my graphics card. It has the following hardware:

Pentium I-7 3770K Ivy Bridge processor
16GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 560 Ti, 2GB RAM graphics card
2 ea - 2 TB 7200 hard disks
1 32GB SSD hard disk for SSD caching

For some reason the graphics in FSX will start pixilating after 2 - 3 hours of flying and/or switching locations or aircraft. Have never been able to account for the problem but have spoken to many who really dislike the 560 Ti card. I am considering going to a SLI or Crossfire configuration or maybe just going to the new 600 series of Nvidia cards. Anyone have any recommendations or thoughts on this subject?

Your system is far better than mine, so it shouldn't be the specs.

Your card and motherboard should have software available that can show you the operating temperatures. My best guess would have been the video card overheating, but I would expect other problems too.

Just for the heck of it check out the AMD RADEON HD78xx series. My system can't utilize the power in those cards, but yours can.

Check out what a slower, less powerful, RADEON HD card can do. It'll be near the bottom of the 4th page of The poor mans sim pit under the heading of "Catalyst Control Center".

When graphics artefacts start appearing on my screen, I suspect Graphics Card overheating; so the first thing I do is check the cooling fan for accumulated dust, and/or a seized bearing slowing the fan down.

Its certently not your system.
I would suspect heat too!

You need to check your gpu for "dust" from the fan to "air out", (use some airpressure, but hold on the fan), might be RAM also!

My system does a pretty good job with one 650ti in it, but the 660 would serve all I would ever want out of my machine. Unfortunately the 650ti doesn't do SLI so a 660 would be your best bet as far as nVidia goes...

The GTX 560 Ti I noticed did have a lower GPU max operating temperature, moreover other cards, so ventillation and cooling could be a issue. Is your power supply unit discharging air on your card causing it to heat up outside of the normal. Open well ventillated area is always prefered, and the addition of cooling fans is always a possible solution.

I also noticed that the Ti technology is a resurrected technology of nVidia that was present in their earlier 4000 series cards. Brought back to in hopes to compete in sales with others from what I have read. I myself prefer nVidia and I do run both cards, ATI and nVidia on PC's. ATI uses intel technology for testing, and nVidia uses AMD technology but supports alot of intel to a certain degree on some of the cards. I don't research ATI all that much, I prefer nVidia.

We definatly use our machines more today than we ever have in the past years. The products we install require additional steps if need be on our end to comply within the manufactures specs. I never purchased a card just because someone else had it and said it was good, but I would check the card out and look at the specs. and then compare with others to see how it favored. Whatever your concluded synopsis was get back and let us know, would be appreciated.

Howdy.

FSX prefers a single card vs crossfire or sli in most cases. It also is very CPU hungry. With your unlocked (K) version ivy bridge and

a moderate overclock on air or water you should not be having any problems! Clean is cool and cool is fast and efficient!

Also, if at all possible, with your multiple hard drives make sure FSX is installed on a drive your OS is not installed on!

You have a great system for FSX!

I have the GTX 660 non TI and I absolutely love the card vs my old ati crossfire setup!

If you decide to upgrade a good rule of thumb is skip at least one if not two generations!

ONE - Are you still having problems? If you haven't found a program to check out your system, let me suggest HWMonitor from CPUID. It beats the hell out of what I was using.
