Time Zones are so annoying...

Postby Fozzer » Sat Mar 23, 2013 7:44 am

Most of my Sim Flights every day involve exploring the California Pacific Seaboard, and as I fly the area whilst cooking my mid-day Dinner (Roast Sausages with loadsa Veg), I often fancy trying out some of the local Cal weather at the same time, via Jeppesen "Real World Weather"....

Trubble is...

..I like flying VFR during the day, and of course, California is 7 hours behind me (GMT-7), so its in the middle of the bleedin' night there, with local weather to suit!

It becomes even more confusing when I dial up my preferred time of the year (Summer/Autumn), and hour of the day (Mid-Day), and Jeppesen local Real Weather, and the final results contradict each other... :( ...!

....And the Time Zone Confusion becomes even more obvious during day-time Multiplayer sessions, when many of my prospective Multiplayer Flight Sim Chums are otherwise involved in highly energetic night-time activities, (or so I am reliably informed!)... ...!

Its only when you are talking to someone else by 'phone around the World, or Real Flying/ Sim Flying around the World, that your are truly aware of different Time Zones!

Paul....passing time, with the aid of various laxatives... :shifty: ...!

You've mentioned this before Paul. I never understood why you don't use GMT/UTC like real aviators. :P

I was just explaining that the Time Zone "annoyance?" for me is due to the fact that most of my on-line Multiplayer Chums are on time zones far distant from mine!
At the bottom of my browser is a list of my favourite time zones: GMT/UTC, Eastern Standard Time, Central Time, Mountain Time , Pacific Time, New Zealand Time, all indicating the precise time in those zones....(I mostly know where my regular Flight Sim Chums live)...
...so if I decide to fly, or converse, with my Chums on-line, I have to check what time it is in their time zone beforehand!
Its no good me expecting to connect with one of my "Pacific Time" Chums, when he (she?) is still fast asleep in bed, cuddling his (her?) Teddy Bear!

When organising Flight Sim Tours, etc, it is vital to be aware the various times around the World.... ;) ...!

..all good fun!

the world its becoming shorter distances today are irrelevant due to globalization (Internet) In a very near future I think the whole world will use in every aspect job, domestic ,etc use two hours the universal time and the local time ,remember the old mail that use to take weeeks to reach another country ,Now is instant..(emails , Skype ,etc)

who knows maybe it isn't a bad idea to include another clock in the cockpit with the UTC

The only other problem that we are faced with, is the rotation time of Planet Earth, dictating what the actual time is in individual places during a 24 hour period!
Speeding up Earth's rotation is going to be a bit of a problem...and the poor old Moon is going to get confused!

I truly get the time zone dimension problem....years ago when we all used to do the Sunday flight sessions, you folks in Britain would be flying mid afternoon, but for me, I had to be up at 0600 just to share in the formations.....not that I ever complained, it was worth it to spend time with my friends around the world. I guess Mark had it pretty nice compared to me on the North American coast, what, with him being in Hungary, a few time zones were breached in our stunts.....

I remember our Multiplayer Tours with much affection, Ken!

Just to show how absolutely charming and considerate, our USA East Coast Chums are, they often arrange our Multiplayer tours to run in the evening, 7 PM GMT/UTC times.
This coincides with around 2 PM in the afternoon for them....

So we fly in the early evening (between tea and supper time), whilst they fly in the early afternoon (just after dinner time..(for those who have their meals at the proper time of the day!))... ;) ...!

From all this, you will gather that if you USA Chums organize a flight at 8 PM EST, your time, it will occur after midnight for we GMT/UTC types, so we can rarely join in "USA evening" flights!...ZZZZzzzz..... ....!

But this; "time zone problem" pales into insignificance, compare to flying with our Australia/New Zealand Chums...who are often a day in front of us all!... ...!

Passing Time....(painfully).... ...!
