Unfortunately I have not been to the West Coast for the last 10 years as with small children such a flight would be torture (not to mention to those sat around us). I am hoping to reacquaint myself in the next couple of years as the relatives that side are starting to notice that we only seem to go to the relatives on the East Coast.......... :?

I've driven from NY to Oshkosh twice (about 2000 miles round trip); non-stop (meaning only stopping for fuel) only once.
Drove from NY to Orlando nonstop twice; once solo. On that trip, I then drove from Miami to New Orleans in only 10 hours... then home from there in about 22 hours.
But the longest drive was definitely from NY to Taos, New Mexico... I had a partner, but did most of the driving. About 32 hours total, each way!!
I wouldn't call it "fun", really, but it has its moments. And it's not so bad if you stop, however briefly, at regular intervals, and after nightfall, when I stop for fuel I will park for about 20 minutes and take a power nap.

My wife and I have a retirement holiday already planned, although we are talking 15 to 20 years down the road. I mentioned to my best friend a few years ago that we wanted to fly into New York and then drive to San Fransisco, but no on the main roads, instead using the back roads a go via "Small Town USA". Well he emigrated to Australia with his family and they took a 10 week holiday getting their and part of it was to do what I had mentioned. He decided to to go Oz the long way around and went West instead of East He hired a Winnebago type wagon and set off. They did no more than a couple of hundred miles a day, stopping a few days when they really liked somewhere and then carried on. They did lots of day trips basically looking at the map having a goal for the night but diverting from the route to check stuff out. It took them just over 5 weeks. His verdict was................I should not wait until I retire......!

The block for me now is a mental one;....."Age"...and my "Captain Sensible" mentality

In my younger days I did things on the spur of the moment, without any further thought.... ....
I would just get into my car/on my motor-bike, and..go..and mostly return with no problems at all....
.....the same as our Chums responding in this thread, in their younger days!

My "Flower Power" days have long since passed, realising that I am no longer invincible and things can go disastrously wrong; so nowadays I have to check to make sure that my "AA Break-down and Recovery" cover is in order even before I go to Sainsbury's, to ensure that if anything goes wrong; me, my bike, and my shopping, will be transported back home again at no further cost or inconvenience!

For me, I can imagine a multitudeof things that can go disastrously wrong, which inhibits any thoughts of me going on long journeys...(or even short ones!).

So that trip to San Francisco, and the Highway101 road trip to LA is all in the mind now...and firmly restricted to daily "Flight Sim" trips!

The problem of being; "Captain Sensible".... :? ...!

Paul....firmly welded to my comfy arm-chair, and wearing my comfy slippers... :) ...!

P.S: That's ME wearing my comfy slippers...NOT my comfy arm-chair!... :o ...!

San Fransisco to LA via the 101, I have done that trip.......things that could go wrong, well...........We had borrowed my aunt's Dodge 600. A lovely convertible. The only problem was the colour, high gloss white with a burgundy interior. It would not have been out of place in an episode of Miami Vice being used as a pimp-mobile.....Anyway I digress. My wife and I though it would be a great idea to drive down to LA via the 101 with the hood down and having a couple of night stops. There is plenty to see, Hurst Castle for example. So off we set. Blazing hot day, not a cloud in sight. My wife had (still has) long blond hair. So she had a very fetching headscarf to hold down any wayward strands of hair. I was in the RAF at the time so it was a short back and sides. Now, my hair grows like weeds. I suppose at my age I should be grateful, hopefully it is an indication that in years to come it will still adorn my bonce.....? However, again I digress.......did I mention it was a blazing hot day and the roof was down........See where this is going....... Well we got as far as Cumbria about half way down when I started to notice a slight glow above that got more and more intense as the day went along. It was about this time that I took an executive decision and made a left turn and headed towards the I5, I just wanted to get to LA, get some industrial strength after-sun from a doctor and have some fun in Disney. My wife was not to impressed at leaving such wonderful surroundings and have them replaced by said I5, but she understood. So onto the I5 it was. Now as an engineer by trade, you tend to take things that other people say to you with a pinch of salt, especially if it is by your aged aunt. She said, "When you go over the San Bernardino Mountains, turn off the air con or the car will overheat".......yer, yer, what is the old bat talking about, this is a modern car (it was 1990-ish). So I5, San Bernardino Mountains coming up, it was dam hot, a/c on full. Now, the car has a feature on it that I had never seen before (although my BMW does today), no water temp gauge, just a big red STOP THE CAR NOW light. So we are cruising along, outside lain, well in the mountains, still going up when said light comes on and all power goes. Did I mention I was in the outside lane. Now I had the fun of swerving across all 740 lanes (or so it seemed to the shoulder), where the car then died........So we get out, open the bonnet and wait........in the midday sun for the car to cool down enough to start again. My head feels like it is on fire and my wife is seriously pissed that I knew better than our aunt. So after about an hour or so, the car started, but the light was flickering on and off. The only way to carry on, was open all the windows (the roof was out of the question due to my head) and put the heating on full to try and pull some of the heat from the engine. Eventually we arrived at a friends house in Hermosa Beach. The next day after a sorting my fire red head out, we went to Disney. Now we are talking the days before satnav. So my wife would have a map on her lap, I would ignore her and we would get lost, a pretty standard set up, one of which my wife was quiet use to, and I would pay for a while later (why I never learned beats the brown stuff out of me). So, I ignored her. We ended up in Inglewood LA. Now I am a live and let live type person and I do try not to tar people with the same brush, but when you are the only white face in a see of "brothers" it does make the old ring piece twitch some what. Now add into this that the car broke down and was peeing steering fluid all over the exhaust manifold and smoking very well, the ring piece twitching went into overdrive.......I will now cut this long story short it got better after that, maybe you are right though Fozzer, best to stay at home.

Matt

PS, To end said story, a local garage opened up on a Saturday, fixed our car, shared their lunch with us, sent one of the lads to the local store for some tea as my wife does not drink coffee, and only charged us for the parts as it was obvious we were on holiday and the owner did not want us to have a bad experience on our visit to LA.........So no matter what Quentin Tarenteno says about Inglewood in Pulp Fiction, it is not all true....................

What a fantastic tale, Matt!

My first read of the day, and it was a joy!

Being very familiar with the route you took, courtesy of my; "Flight Sim", and my; "18-Wheels-of-Steel" trips around Cal, I followed you all the way!

I loved the "Pulp Fiction" bit, in relation to Down-town LA. I read the LA times (and Kron4 News) each day, and I know exactly what you mean...a very dark and scary place!... ...!

The one thing I don't experience, from the "Flight Sim altitude", are the "740" lanes of Interstate 5, I just sit here in the comfort of my chair and watch it via the Traffic Web Cams!

The San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains are a familiar area during my "flights", with Big Bear Airport high up in the air!..(need to weaken the Mixture for take-off!)

"Mulholland Drive" in the rush-hour traffic ring any bells?..... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mulholland_Drive .... ;) ...!

Its a sobering thought to remember, that not very long ago, the Los Angeles Valley was just full of Orange Groves! http://ucanr.org/blogs/blogcore/postdet ... ostnum=924

Its amazing how much the place has changed since the 1840's, "Cowboy film" days!

A fantastic read, Matt.... ...!

Many thanks!

Paul... :D ...!

A big rig on the 101, now that could be very entertaining Fozzer. Some of the bends are so sharp they are almost a three point turn in a normal car

As for the 740 lanes, when you are in the outside lane and there are cars and a fore mentioned big rigs steaming past you and your car suddenly has a 3rd of a horse power and is doing a good impression of an asthmatic lawnmower going up hill , I think that the estimate of 740 was rather conservative.... :obscene-tolietpush:

...I'm a bit of a cheat, Matt...

I leave the trailer in the yard, and go for a California tour, just in my Peterbilt Tractor unit....

...much easer to get round the sharp corners... ;) ...!

The (new) classic 389 is my favourite..... http://www.peterbilt.com/

I watched the film; "Duel" on my Tele (again) last night....with the killer Peterbilt truck.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duel_%281971_film%29

..I've travelled that road many times in my Flight Sims; from LA to Palmdale via Santa Clarita; I5 to Highway 14, to Soledad Canyon Road, to the crash site!
(Watch out for the Union Pacific train...STOP at the crossing...and look behind!).

Try Rig-n-roll just in the Cab unit!

Hi Paul... <<q

Interesting topic.

Before all the children came along, darn old girl, poked a little fun at her and she took it seriously...

We used to do one or two fly in trips a year to various parts of Canada and the United States. Sleeping under the wing of your own bugsmasher and enjoying the comradeship of other aviators, making many new friends was what it was all about. Sometime our flights would take a day and a half just to get there.

Along came the children and a Cessna 337 was not big enough and could not afford a DeHavilland of Canada DHC-3 "Otter" or a Douglas DC3.

We purchased a small motor home, the old girl loaded everything but the kitchen sink and we would travel several days to an airshow. A lot more freedom with the motor home than an aircraft however much more time is needed to get there and back.

Being an aviator, sometimes I would only get several days off a month and that did not leave any time to go anywhere. We all survived and you know the old saying, "Time to Spare...Go by Air" stands true. I never once lost a day off work because of weather but travelling overland made things a lot smoother for us as a family.

Canada is not portrayed very well in any of the Microsoft Flight Simulator Games or even the Payware add on ORBX. It is too bad as we have more lakes, rivers and bays than all other countries combined.
We are the second largest country in the world bordered by three (3) oceans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_Canada

I remember years ago talking to an American from the State of Texas.
We were all sitting around the campfire and he told us even with his new half ton truck it took almost a day to go across his farm from one side to the other.

The old girl told him to buy a Land Rover and he could do it in a couple of hours...

We do not take any long trips either driving or flying in a bugsmasher now Paul. We prefer the train, our own Cabin (which is half a car, two cabins to a car and they need booking months ahead of the trip) and there is a Observation Car with a Bar. With Ribbon Railing you get a smooth ride, not that clickety clack one used to hear and feel. The food, well that is just excellent on the train.

I do not think we put more than two thousand (2000) miles on a vehicle a year now.

Boat Cruises are another wonderful way to travel and see Canada. Flying Commercial one does not see much from thirty (30,000) feet, however if one is in a hurry that is the way to go from coast to coast.

I will just add a couple of other things Paul. The roads and rest stops here if travelling by motor car or motorcycle are very good. Lots of camp sites and Provincial Parks for camping or RVing.

There are several world yacht cruises a year which use Canadian Inland Waterways and they stop right here where we are for several days. Lots for them to see and do on the inland waterways.
Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug
