Just a little heads-up....

Postby Fozzer » Fri Apr 05, 2013 3:44 am

..for any newcomers to the excellent FS 2004, who may be unaware of it....

Although I use FS 2004 "FS Global SE" for my World Mesh, I also find that Stephen Rothlisberger's "Terrain Mesh for the whole World" invaluable for adding that little bit more accurate realism to the ground scenery!....hills and valleys!...

http://simviation.com/1/fs2004terrainmesh

Whenever I wish to explore a new area in my FS 2004, I first add the particular scenery mesh to those areas in my add-on scenery library!
It makes a "World" of difference to the experience!
The hills and valleys become more pronounced, and more representative of the actual area your are travelling over!
Well worth a try!

Paul.... ...!

Download, and run the "Terrain Map" to locate your desired areas!...(1.5 MB).[/quote]

Is FS Global worth the cost? I've been considering it... but I'll cross that bridge once I get my prop and mixture controls on my throttle quadrant to function correctly, oh and when I get the one COM/NAV panel replaced or repaired being that part of one the LEDs went out and it's only about six months old!!!

The difference between FS 2004 Default Mesh, and FS 2004 FS Global SE Mesh, is a different as chalk and cheese!

You can see the difference as the program installs!

Adding FS 2004 "Ultimate Terrain" then brings the whole scenery to life!

What's the SE stand for? I've searched it online and I get returns for FS Global 2010 X, could you maybe email me some screenshots when you have time? be58d@comcast.net

My copy is: "FS Global Special Edition" for FS 2002 and FS 2004......purchased in 2006...Price: £34 from Just Flight.

My first priority has always been to improve the ground scenery mesh from Default, to accurately replicate the ground elevations as appears on the Maps of the areas

I figured it was Special Edition, just wanted to clarify... They've released Ultimate (12 DVDs) but it's $80.00.

OK, BE...

I'll grab you some screenies of the north Frisco area which you will be familiar with; Mount Diablo, Livermore Valley, Sonoma Valley, Napa Valley, etc...

Just remember, I will also have added the Rothlisberger's ground "Mesh" to the scenery, as well!

Always looking much better when flown in the actual Sim!

NOTE: The scenery also includes "Ultimate Terrain USA + Canada Mesh" showing accurate roads and railway lines, rivers, water ways, coast, etc, etc...

P.S. The funny-looking clouds are my Soaring scenery Effects, generating "lift" when close to them.

P.P.S ...Note: You get lots of; "blue sky" in sunny California!.... ...!

I've had a helluva time trying to figure out how to get the SRTM stuff to work. I followed all the directions as shown in the Simviation page for it, but I just can't get it figured out.

Could someone nudge me in the right direction?
What was that thing I was supposed to remember to do?

Its easy-peasy, Carl...

If you have added any scenery to your add-on scenery list before, then you will know the procedure.
The mesh is installed in exactly the same way.
(1) Make a New Folder. Give it a name to suit your scenery mesh
(2) Make a New Folder INSIDE the above folder (1). Name it "scenery".
(3) Make a new folder INSIDE the Folder (1). Name it "texture"..( 3..not always necessary)
(4) Drag the downloaded mesh file(s) and drop it/them into the "scenery" folder.

Start the Sim...Settings/Scenery library...."add" the new scenery in the usual way, the same as you did with your other scenery*!

Close the Sim, and re-start it..VIOLA..your exciting new Mesh is in place, and will appear in the add-on scenery list!

Thank you for the help. This appears to be more or less the same instructions I've followed, but failed at.
I've been known to be a little thick at times. Please bear with me.

In my MS FS2004 install, there are two folders(amongst others.) One is called "add-on scenery", the other is just "scenery."

For the other scenery I've installed, mostly high-res photo stuff from G. Razek, it all goes into the "Add-on scenery" folder. When in the sim, and I choose "add scenery" from the settings menu, it defaults to the add-on scenery folder, so I managed to figure that stuff out.

Should the Mesh data/folders go into this "add-on scenery" folder, or just the regular "scenery" folder?

For all I know, my previous attempt actually DID work, but it's just not at the level of detail I expected. Phoenix, AZ is pretty flat, geographically. But I am lazy, so even small hills seem like mountains to me.

EDIT: One additional question. Does each section of mesh get it's own set of folders, or can I pile 3 or 4 of the mesh sections into one folder? Thanks again.
What was that thing I was supposed to remember to do?

Hello Carl...

I drag and drop my scenery Folders into the "Add-on Scenery" Folder, and "add" it from there..the same as all the other "stuff"... :D ...!

(I generally leave the "scenery" Folder alone)... ;) ...1

Often, to avoid confusion, I put the Mesh scenery for different parts of the World, in separate; "Named" Folders, to make them easy to trace, to enable/disable in the scenery library, as required.

Its just a "Named" folder, containing a "scenery" folder, containing the actual file(s)!

Have fun!

Paul... ...!

P.S. if a download contains both "scenery" AND "texture" folders, I pop them BOTH into my "Named" Folder, in the Add-On Scenery folder!
