Closing the Chat Window?...

Postby Fozzer » Thu May 29, 2008 5:09 am

Hello Chums...

You know the situation, in Multiplayer....

You are just about to line up accurately with the runway at the last minute, and you find that your lovely old Chat Window is suddenly blocking your view ahead.... :(.....

Normally, you have to frantically fumble for your Mouse, either to move/slide the Window out of the way, or close it down by clicking on the little "x"...."somewhere" in the corner!.... :o....

...and in the meantime you have either crashed into "something", or you have a "Missed Approach" situation, which means you have to attempt to locate exactly where you are, and try another landing... :'(...!

Either way, it's bleedin' frustratin'!.... >:(...!

So...

We all know that "Opening" the Chat Window is obtained with a "Enter" key press....is there a quick-tap, key press to "Close" it down again without using the Mouse.... ::)....?

..."going round again" is doing my head in!... :-[...!

Ta, Chums... :-*...!

Paul...G-BPLF.... ;D...!

P.S.....don't even think about recommending "Teamspeak"!.... >:(...!

..... ;D...!

I don't think there is a key (combo) for that, Paul. What I always do is before everything takes of, I drag the chatwindow into the lower left corner of the screen and reduce the width. Make it as small as you want. Now it will never be in your way again.

Crash ;)

...trubble is, Carlo, that being a keen Beech Baron driver, (as I am),  I find that I constantly need access to ALL those useful instruments on my 2D Panel, and the Chat Widow is bound to obscure some vital bit of information that will most likely keep me, and my Trusty Baron, alive and in good working order... ;).... :)...

So..... my Chat Window is always where a Head-up Display would normally be, thus obscuring my view of the outside World in times of great need.. ::)...!

...arse!.... >:(...!

Paul... ;D...!

P.S. ..so far, it looks as though there isn't a Magic Key Combination.... :'(....!

Fozzer,

Seriously.... I find the fact that Microsoft included a key command to open the chat window but not one to CLOSE the chat window a real screw up.  What were they thinking?

I suppose you could use Key2Mouse to do it.  But that is payware.

As to flying .... right now I am busy getting ready to get a firing of my large wood kiln out to get work shipped off to Japan for an exhibition..... and then I leave for Japan myself right after I ship the pieces.  So not too much "flying" happening right now. Whatever time I have is going to "mod-ing" and some simpit and sim software testing work.

Shortly I'll be on a real JAL 474 though.  :)

best,

Or you could just use Teamspeak! That's right...I said it....deal with it!  :D

Seriously though, I don't think any members here are going to be jerks about hearing each other's voices! Not quite sure what you are afraid of with the program beyond that, but it's worth a try!  ;)

Busy with real-world flight training lately on Saturdays, and work on Sundays so multi-player flights with you guys does not look like a possibility until mid-summer, but I'll be back to soar the friendly skies with you guys sometime in the future!

THANK YOU!

I could swear that I have read the key assignments over and over and never saw a "close chat window" keypress.  Sigh...... gettin' old.   ::)

I'm sure there are freeware programs that can map a key combination to a single key.
For instance, I can use the Logitech SetPoint software to assign a key combination to any special key or function key on my Logitech keyboard (no, I don't work for Logitech!). e.g. I can assign ctrl-shift-] to the "calculator" key. You could also place a sticker nearby: "close da friggin chat window". SORTED!  ;)

...on your side of the Pond you are obviously familiar with, and have gotten got used to, the brain destroying sound of GWB, Jodie Foster, etc, etc?... ;)... ;D...!

I have got a complete Pilots Headset, sound system, and the Teamspeak Program, and it all works, but many of our Multiplayer Chaps here and at other FS Sites I use, still prefer the "fun" of using the cosy old Chat Window for communicating with each other....

It gives us all a laugh....

...and it doesn't give me a headache!....;)...!

And as it's only a Flight Simulator "Game", we don't take it too seriously...

My question is why you hate voice comms in FS, and prefer typing while flying, but you would also disagree with texting on a cell phone while driving or flying?

I'm confused... ;D

There's a reason you use a radio to talk to ATC instead of  texting ATC while flying :o

I have never been fond of voice except in ultra realistic situations like VATSIM.

I use dual screen so my chat window is always to the right screen on the left side of my FS Nav map. ;)
