I thought this could be useful for everyone.

I have FS9 and when flying multiplayer, when the other aircraft come nearer they stutter, the move, they stop, they move, thy stop etc.
How do I need to adjust my FS9.cfg (and the other players one) to get smoother game? formation flight is impossible the way I have it (standrad setiings) - her the are:

Well, I found it out by playing around with the settings! :D

I there's anyone interested I could write a small prog to set the different multiplayer settings,
which CANNOT be edited through FS9.

The No. 1 Rule in FS 2002/2004 online Multiplayer, is for EVERYONE to make sure their Frame rates are LOCKED at 20 FPS to reduce the load on the Server, which all the Players are using!!

DO NOT set your frame rates to anything more than 20 FPS, and NEVER, EVER, to "Unlimited" FPS!... >:(...!

Most of the regulars apply this Rule, and is the main reason why we do not suffer from excessive stuttering during our Multiplayer flights!

P.S. Another tip is to make sure you have sufficient RAM installed. Upgrading to 2 Meg, or more, will make all the difference to the overall speed and reaction of the Sim, especially if you have Clouds enabled and Autogen wound up to Max.....(I always fly with "Clear Skies" in Multiplayer!).

If you notice your Hard Drive light flickering while you fly, it indicates that you have insufficient RAM installed, and your Scenery/Textures/etc are spooling from your Hard drive instead of Fast Ram...this WILL cause stuttering!....

I find that to achieve a smooth effect frames are best locked at 25....20 still makes my sim stutter a bit...

(most films are shown at 24 fps (I think))

Mic, don't forget that your computer not only has to deal with your plane in multiplayer but also the others. If one of the players has locked his FPS higher than 20 it will affect the performance of all the other players simulators, because of the amount of data send. Thus causing stutters, jumping aircraft and so on. If I fly solo my frames are locked at 25, in multiplayer I reduce them to 20.

Bizarre......as I can fly formation easily in mp providing the connection is good.....tbph I think the quality of the connection is the main factor....

Connection quality also plays a factor. But since not everyone has a ultra high speed broadband connection (mine is 1.5 mbps), keeping the amount of data to a minimum has it advantages.

I do the same as you, 25fps for solo, 20fps for multiplayer. I also have a fast connection (around 1.5 - 2.0 mbps) and very rarely see stuttering.  ;)

;D ;D You understood me wrong!!! Completely wrong!!!  ;D ;D

It's not the game that was stuttering, it was the other aircraft!!! And by the way, both computers had their FPS at 20, and we didn't use a server.
My friend played the host, I wrote down the IP. done.

the solution was in the cfg file the following entry:

PACKETS_PER_SEC=4

4 was standard, I set it to 8 et voila, much better! But I will try higher values the next days.
