Paul,

The Rockies have 14,000 foot peaks.  Many airports, like Telluride and Aspen, are in the 9000 foot range, if I remember correctly.  Denver, a low point......  is at 5280 feet.

best,

...............john

Yep, its about 10,000 and up.  Ive been on Pikes Peak, tallest one inn the colorado rockies, about 14,400 feet.

As I said before, any piston will need to be turbocharged.  So either find one that is or go into the aircraft.cfg of the one you sidh to use and under engine data youll see turbocharged=0, change the 0 to 1 and you have yourself a turbocharged airplane

Ok, so it's very easy to put a turbo in my C182? Cool.

Ill probably be using the Beechcraft Baron 58TC if I can come. I've done aerobatics at the top of Mt. Everest in that so it shouldnt be a problem.

Jacob, I suspect the turbo-charged Default Beech Baron will be my only choice for the Rockies Tour.
I can't think of any other Default! piston General Aviation aircraft* in the Hangar which would fill the bill for flight at high altitudes.... ...!

* Remembering that this is a General Aviation Tour, not a Warbird training exercise...:o...!

Cheers...!

I have suddenly overcome my fear of heights after many years of sim flying... ;)...!

Just tried out my Trusty Default Beech Baron to see if it is capable of clearing the Rocky Mountains, (14,000 feet?).

I took it up from sea level to 20,000 ASL at a climb rate of 1000 FPM and a speed of 160 to 180 knots with careful adjustment of the Mixture controls at higher altitudes, (Makes a BIG difference!).
So it took round about 20 minutes to level out at 20,000 feet ASL, and a final, level flight, full throttle speed of 200 knots.

Increasing the rate-of-climb considerably works fine to increase height quickly at the expense of a slower overall climb speed!

So it looks as though my General Aviation! Default Beechcraft Baron 58 is more than adequate for the job in hand... ;)...!

Sorted... ;D...!

Paul...G-BPLF... 8)...!

The course, height, and rate of climb, were all set on the Radios, using the Autopilot... ;)...!

Cheers for the Map Foz!

Had little time this weekend to post any more up-to-date detailed info regarding the Rockies Tour, but over the weekend i will include the mesh etc that you need.

Cheers Chaps, and have a great weekend.

PS: You might want to slow down foz (160) because at that rate you will finish the tour within a day..LOL!

Tee-Hee.... ;D...!

...slow down...?

Mmmmm......may think about it... ;)....!

LOL... ;D...!

By the way....just installed 2 Scenery Mesh files of Colorado....around 13 MB each.
NA44, and NA45

May need one of two more perhaps, depending upon the area we will be flying:

...as a pleasant alternative to the Beech Baron twin, this turbo-charged, single prop, very slippery, speedy beauty is an excellent alternative up grade from the standard Cessna 182S to the Cessna 182 RG, (Retractable Gear)...;D...!

All for FREE!...and available from here, with a SUPERB wood panel, with all the fitments you could ever wish for, courtesy of Robert Hawk...!!!

...and you can even have your own registration letters/numbers in the fuselague....;)...!

An ideal, high performance, General Aviation tourer for the Rocky Mountains...;D...!

I can't stand this anymore- I'm going to try to finally fix my Multiplayer problem for this one; I don't want to miss it.

I've done quite a bit of FS9 flying in the Rockies- mostly in the DC3 (which, given time, will clear the highest peaks, and does well at high-alt. fields), but I think going smaller is a good idea for visiting some really short mtn. strips.... hmmm...

As for the recommended mesh, I'd recommend the free SRTM mesh available here at SimV. I've seen quite a bit of it for this area, and it's not bad, looks or framerate-wise.

If you guys are planning to extend your tour of the "Rocky Mountains" over into the Tetons in Wyoming.........

It would be WELL worth it to buy the "Yellowstone" payware package 10m mesh from FSGenesis; it makes that area amazing.   I think as a single download it is about $10.  (Broadband... it is big!.)

best,

I have been tootling around the area the past couple of days, and actually wasn't too worried by the heights...
...because...
The whole of Colorado seems to be built on a plateau 8,000+ feet above sea level as it is... :o...!
So from most airstrips it's only a couple of thousand feet climb-out to clear the tops of most of the mountains...;)...!

I've already installed the NA44 and NA45 SRTM mesh so far, and its quite impressive. No frame rate hit... ;D...!

Cheers all...!

Paul...Need to twiddle with the mixture control(s) at high altitudes.... ;)...!

Aye, and many passes through the mountains- half the fun of mtn flying is navigating passes! No need to always fly at an elevation for safe clearance of the tallest peak in the quadrangle ( I assume this will be a VFR flight?).
I've already installed the NA44 and NA45 SRTM mesh so far, and its quite impressive. No frame rate hit... ;D...!

It's also pretty benign as far as airport elevations, etc. go. I've seen some anomalies, but no worse than the default mesh.

Paul...Need to twiddle with the mixture control(s) at high altitudes.... ;)...!

Oh, yeah... even with  turbocharging, starting at the midway point then checking for best power is a must during run-up at fields ab ove 5,000 MSL.
