"Stupid" router question

Can't find an answer in any stickies here... I understand how to set up a router for MP, but my question is:
If the router's firewall is opened to allow traffic thru it, the computers behind it will still be protected by their own firewalls, right?
Also, I'm a little sketchy on the involvement of router IP vs local machine IP... I assume that in my scenario (four computers, only one which is mine, sharing a connection through a router [not networked!]), if I am set up for a MP connection, the others will be unaffected, except for the router firewall now being disabled?

I have some issues with FS9 itself keeping me out of MP, but I'm hoping to remedy that soon, and I need to understand more about dealing with the router... I just need to avoid making any housemates' lives miserable.

most firewall problems are with the computer firewall. Both computer and router firewall need to be opened. If you disable the router firewall the computer will still have a firewall to protect your computer. But in order to do mp both need to have the ports open

If your opening ports through the router then they only apply to the computer they are opened for. For instance I have 3 computers on the network. If I want to MP then I open the ports on my FS comp ..... if I want to host a session then I open the ports on both my FS comp and the Comp that hosts the server. In both these cases my wifes computer is completely unaffected as the router doesn't open any ports on hers.

exactly.. this is also the reason why you cannot connect to an internet multiplayer session with more than one computer from a Local Network !!

Also, if you "manually" open ports in the Windows Firewall for game play on a specific server,  make sure to assign the port to be open to ONLY THAT SERVER'S IP ADDRESS.......not the whole darn Internet.  It is an option when you are assigning open ports.

Thats not true!!!  I had my laptop and my friends computer going through the same router and we were both flying online.
