It's making news over this side of the pond

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8049780.stm

Have just been wandering around the web, and have looked at the site which is owned by the person who at the moment is being accused of the hack. I guess there is no point in hiding his name. It's all over the avsim forums plus he has even spoken about this accusation at his own free will.

This is his statement:

Morning Everyone,

Well this is a kick in the teeth aint it.

There are two issues here it seems.

1. Mass Mail - Lets hit that cookie. Yes, I send out mass emails each email has an opt out service the emails are collected by SF sources as well as some other sites that I run as part of my business, its not related to avsim.

2. Avsim got hacked.... Well I actually have inside information on this one, I am doubtful that it was hacked, its likley to be a service failure, I have much conversation history with thier guys to back this up but in all honesty I want nothing to do with it so I will not post it...... They need a henchman.

After I spoke with Gareth this morning I asked him to lock this thread to stop speculation and conjecture, because that is all it is, the facts are presented here and it need no go any further.

Kindest Regards

Phil

What does everyone make of this statement then? Before I read his post, I had actually chosen my side...maybe I have jumped the gun, so after reading his statement, I think all that we can do now is just watch what happens, rather than point the blame at someone without a mass of evidence.

You know what?

I think the entire subject of HACK and who did it should not be discussed and I am going to repost something I did over at AVSIM about this

Until such time as a proper investigation has made a fair and accurate conclusion based on information none of us have at our disposal this subject should not be discussed in public as it serves no purpose other than to further the wrong attitudes and considerations. In fact it can very much backfire and make matters worse.

Any goverment agency (agent), security/legal firm or case manager for a crime would say the exact same thing and would not endorse making any public statement(s) especially when an investigation could be pending.

Guilty or not of a hack crime or malicious access.. he did use AVSIM email data/information underhanded.

Regarding the rest until such time as the logs and the data to back them up have been reviewed there is no reason to go on internet Witch Hunts.

He may be guilty as sin..

Very true Nick. I'm not looking at making accusations here, I'm just simply passing on information. I'm very interested in seeing the final outcome of this subject, and I think that goes for everyone really.

I say the same exact thing posts ago when I began to see serius accusations blaming X entity like ,you, me, the monster of the snow , the Aliens, Jimmie Hoffa , without any LEGAL prove is bad.

Innocent until guilty is proven

Nick and Alrot are correct in this.

All these post-laden internet discussions popping up everywhere of "who is to blame" or even "what happened" are just a waste of bandwidth.

I agree, Nick. There have been two "incidents" that've occurred back-to-back over the past few days:

1. Spam email was sent from a server owned by Phil Dawson, who has admitted to this publically.

It has been demonstrated that many of the email addresses used by Phil were only known to have been used for AVSIM logins, but even that proves nothing. It is certainly evidence; but is not of itself proof.

2. AVSIM's two servers had their HD's partitions destroyed as near simultaneously as makes no difference.

The fact that Phil had been given the "keys to the car" so to speak nothwithstanding, it remains only a coincidence, not a proof of any responsibility for #2 having occurred.

Now I will conceed that if a steaming pile smells like dog poop it probably is, but...

I dont disagree with any of that and I traced the spam I got back to the parent company you know who works for so I know who did the nasty with the email addresses

As for the rest there are a few other possibilities and unless there is something that defines a time stamp connection to 'you know who' even a circumstantial one there is no guilty party.

No worries.. I learned a long time ago that the dog pile sitting in the middle of the pretty flowers establishes the fact that the dog was there... the problem is, which dog and who was walking it.

Someone from the same place may have been walking the dog that day.. does not mean its the same person

and there are 2 other possibilities too
