Politics

Postby Kaworu » Mon Dec 24, 2007 10:01 pm

Hello, this is directed towards the mods. In our sigs, can we have them make a political statement? Nothing outright offensive, but just a statement. Of course, what I find offensive is different from the next guy, but I'm not planning anything with swearing/disturbing subjects. Thanks!  ;D

NO! Politics and religion are banned from the forum for the simple reason someone ALWAYS gets offended and then there is a flaming row. A great many people have been banned because they couldn't obey the rules and that isn't about to change anytime in the next 27 decades ;)

The only difference between a dictator and a teacher is teachers are a marksmen with chalk and board rubbers whilst dictators tend to have very stupid facial hair ;) ;D

Thanks!  :D

I just wish that people would just listen to each other! Some people are so closed minded! I'm just venting now, but all wars, in one way or another, have been caused by the opponents faliure to listen to each other, and compromise. It is just frustrating when you look back on how many lives have been lost throughout history because of people who didn't think they had to listen to what others had to say.  :(

The problem is twofold: first, in order to have absolute faith in one's political or religious views requires a mental firewall that cannot be penetrated by any argument. This results in forum exchanges that are like desperate sieges: messy, bloody, expensive and with little benefit to either party, sapping the enrgy of the surrounding region (this site).

Second, just about any other topics can be debated with some deference to facts. Sure, lots of people get precious about their opinions about sports, flightsim add-ons, music, etc... but even the most hard-nosed fanboy will eventually shrug and say "to each his own", or "yeah, good point but I still like/dislike this thing; I guess it's just me" whereas this is not the case when it comes to "P" and "R".

For most  people, religion and politics are not philosophical subjects open to debate but are in fact cornerstones of the foundation of their self-image; specifically their image as a member of some social or ethnic group. It's an extension of simple tribalism, which is hardwired into us. No good can come from  attacking these beliefs directly, which is bound to happen sooner or later in any thread on either of those subjects.

Anyway, I've crawled out far enough on this particular limb... but all in the name of Philosophy, which I trust is still welcome here. ;D

Sure it is.  But in the end, you and all the world exist only in my mind.  You are all figments of my overactive imagination, and I, and I alone, are the sole Entity.

and the neat thing is, none of you can disprove that because I am imagining all your arguments and counterarguments!
